In best Doctor Who fashion, The Dark One continues on from the cliffhanger of The Rebel, with Kyle Valentine holding the others at gunpoint, or rather disc point.  Things move pretty quickly after this, with Maria's brother rescued, Kyle discovering that his father is dead and Michael's brother Trevor goes over to the dark side (well, Elsevan DuPris's anyway).

Our band of heroes and heroines are also going through some pretty big changes.    Michael has to deal with Trevor's betrayal, Liz finds herself vaguely attracted to Adam now that she's broken up with Max and the former leader of the group continues his descent into zombie mode following his connection with the aliens' consciousness.

But it's Alex and Isabel who are the featured couple in the blurb.  Since his return from the aliens' home planet, Alex has developed into Roswell's chick magnet, much to Isabel's annoyance, although she's got more important things on her mind as she prepares to undergo her akino which Max undertook back in The Watcher.  Except that after seeing Max she decides that she'd rather die instead.

The Dark One is better than its predecessor, and as the penultimate book in the series sets things up for the inevitable conclusion in The Salvation.  Isabel's condition puts an urgency into the situation and manages to avoid being a repeat of the Max situation five books ago.  Throw in a couple of deaths, Liz's hilarious treatment of Kyle (although I almost felt sorry for him) and those of us who've stuck with the series for nine books and bound to be returning for the last lap. back to the top
