After the rather obvious conclusion to THE STOWAWAY - it was just a case of who it was going to be if you ask me - THE VANISHED deals with the group's attempts to get Alex back from the aliens' home planet.

With the inclusion of Cameron and Adam, the last book seemed more than a little cluttered, with too many characters for the book's length. THE VANISHED doesn't have quite the same problem - Alex is gone, and Cameron's done a runner, so we're down to six main characters again.

There's also a shift in the group's dynamics. In the first couple of books, things seemed to be headed towards a Max and Liz, Izzy and Alex and Michael and Maria set-up, but that's out of the window now. Max and Liz are still together, although Adam has a definite crush on Liz, and with Max still pretty much wiped out from his efforts in THE STOWAWAY, she seems a bit more disposed towards him than previously. Of course, entering her dreams and saving her from a nightmare might have something to do with it.

Alex's fate looms large with everyone, especially when Max sees that not everyone on his home planet is pleased to see him. Getting him back is therefore a top priority, although they seem to have very few means at their disposal, especially since the ship has vanished.

There's also the small matter of trying to find the annoying Elsevan DuPris, Izzy gets to do a bit of spying at the Manes residence and discovers something pretty surprising, and Michael finds himself the new owner of one of Roswell's main tourist attractions. Naturally, all this leads up to the inevitable cliffhanger ending as the group try to rescue Alex.

Although it's clearly aimed at a teen audience, the series still manages to be an enjoyable read . It may not be much like the TV series that it spawned, but it's still retaining my interest and, as a series, it's still better than the BUFFY YA one. BACK TO THE TOP
