Max and Liz are the two supposedly main characters in the fourth ROSWELL HIGH novel, but it's really Max who takes centre stage here. After the events at the end of THE SEEKER, Max's health takes a turn for the worse and he eventually seeks the advice of Ray from the UFO museum. It soon transpires that Max is undergoing the akino, a rite-of-passage type thing where he would normally just connect to the collective consciousness of the aliens' home planet. Except that he's too far away, which means he's going to die. He manages to brazen things out for a while, but Liz manages to get the get the truth out of him. Of course, while it might be Max who's in danger now, Izzy and Michael will be in the firing line sooner or later. Elsewhere, there's the usual relationship problems going on. Maria admits to Liz how she feels about Michael, who seems to regard her as a sister that he can kiss; Max and Liz are still doing the whole 'just good friends' thing and Isabel is forced to defend Alex to the stuck-up Stacey. Obviously, the Max storyline is the main plot thrust here, and once again everyone must pull together to try to safe him. After an initial attempt involving the six teenagers fails, there's nothing for it but to try to infiltrate Project Clean Slate to get the crystals from the aliens' ship that will help Max connect with their home world. Maria's "psychic" talents from The Seeker come in handy here, but there's a tragic consequence as the aliens attempt a raid. THE WATCHER is certainly upto the standards set by the first three books, and its cliff-hanger ending is bound to get most people buying the next book in the series. Hopes weren't particularly high when I started reading the ROSWELL HIGH novels, but they're continuing to prove an enjoyable read. BACK TO THE TOP |
