While the first Roswell High novel concentrated on Max and Liz, the second has Isabel and Alex to the fore. After a rival school's mascot flips through the air after a stand-off with Isabel, Max and Michael accuse her of endangering them all with such a public demonstration of her powers. Despite the others feeling a power drain, Isabel denies using her powers, but then something weird happens when she's playing miniature golf with Alex. Can she use her powers subconsciously? And can she win her bet with Stacey Scheinin over new guy in school Nikolas? Well it certainly looks like it when she and Nikolas start on a spree of wild behaviour - bowling with pool balls, shotgunning ice-cream - with Tabasco sauce naturally (you have to take your shirt off to do this apparently and given Katherine Heigl's comments about her role in 100 Girls I'm sure a lot of male fans would've been interested in seeing this televised!) and breaking into the mall. Elsewhere, Max gets a new job and tries to convince himself that he wants to be just good friends with Liz, Michael prepares to change foster homes and gets closer to Maria and Liz gets quizzed by Sheriff Valenti. We also get to learn more about the aliens' powers, from dream walking through to knocking people out. Naturally things come to a head after Nikolas and Isabel break into the mall and are discovered by Valenti. This sets things up for the next book in the series as someone gets shot, Maria discovers something and there's a surprise revelation. Like the first book in the series, The Wild One is another surprising good read. As with the Buffy books that are aimed at younger readers it'll probably only take you a couple of hours to get through, but it's certainly and enjoyable, if understandably lightweight, read. back to the top |
