After a long wait for the Sixth Doctor and Evelyn's return in last month's BLOODTIDE, they're back again, in Big Finish's first vampire story, PROJECT: TWILIGHT. In search of a Chinese restaurant, the TARDIS brings the pair to Bermondsey, where they find a trail of animal carcasses which soon leads them to The Dusk, a casino that isn't all it seems. And neither is Reggie Mead's lusting after Cassie. On television, the Sixth Doctor's era was one of the bloodiest in the programme's history, and PROJECT: TWILIGHT is probably the goriest Big Finish production to date. The nature of the story means that Evelyn hasn't got her usual optimistic outlook, but this works well and adds to the character. The threat presented those behind The Dusk unfolds over the first half of the story, with clues along the way until the Doctor finally realises what he's up against. Although I would have to say that the Doctor's final line in part two did seem rather like the audio equivalent of those crash-zooms of Colin Baker's face we got on TV a lot of the time. The small cast all do a good job, and it was good to see that single mother and runaway Cassie didn't become the pathetic victim that she could have been, despite what happens to her (and it's not pleasant). However, I wasn't exactly convinced by her apparent "cure" towards the end, which didn't seem to make total sense. The production itself is up to the usual Big Finish standards, and the incidental music by Jane Elpinston and Jim Mortimore makes a nice change from the usual BF fare. Another solid outing from Big Finish then, and for the first time in ages, there's an amusing out-take stuck onto the end of disc two. BACK TO THE TOP |
