After the disappointing SHADOW OF THE SCOURGE, Big Finish's audio range bounces back with one of its best releases to date. Judging by the story's early scenes, we're in for a comedy treat, with Sam Kelly's Eugene Tacitus (who sounds like a doddery Jon Pertwee to my ears) recanting in a way that could have come straight out of BLACKADDER - indeed, I was reminded of Edmund's "I recant my Catholicism" quote. With Bonnie Langford paired with Sylvester McCoy in THE FIRES OF VULCAN, Big Finish already had three companions - Peri, Mel and Evelyn - to use with the Sixth Doctor but, as the cover reveals, THE HOLY TERROR seems the Doctor accompanied by a shape-shifter currently stuck in the form of a penguin, and voiced in an American accent by Robert Jezek. However, despite featuring a penguin and with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments, THE HOLY TERROR is far from being a comedy. In fact, there are some genuinely chilling moments. Peter Guiness' Childeric is excellent, as is former EASTENDERS star Roberta Taylor's deliciously evil portrayal of Berengaria, especially where just why the TARDIS has landed where it has is explained, and we learn why the characters behave as they do. THE HOLY TERROR is definitely one of the best Big Finish releases to date, nicely balancing comedy and horror and with the usual good production values. BACK TO THE TOP |
