"The search for the source of their power may be the cause of their destruction" promises the blurb on the cover of Something Wiccan This Way Comes. As usual, that's a slight exaggeration as the "search for the source of their power" is just Paige's desire to drag her sisters along to a Wiccan convention. Freed from the practicalities of having to shoot a series in San Francisco, the Charmed novels have been keen on sending the sisters to more exotic locations, so naturally the convention takes place in Las Vegas. Of course, we don't get there immediately as Paige's attempts to interest her sisters in the convention initially fall on death ears. It's not until Daryl Morris tells them about a string of dead wiccans that Piper and Phoebe are persuaded to go in the hope that the murderer will find the convention too much of an opportunity to miss. Hmmm... a string of dead wiccans sounds a bit like the series' pilot Something Wicked This Way Comes doesn't it? Arriving at the convention, the girls are surprised that they're not staying in a swanky hotel, but on a campsite down the road. A meet and greet on the first night introduces them (and us) to some of their fellow campers, and it's not long before the body count starts rising once more. The rest of the novel isn't as straightforward as some Charmed novels (the title is actually quite clever in this regard), but as usual it's pretty undemanding fare - fine for an hour or two, but pretty disposable stuff really. Although the title is slightly cleverer than it first appears - And the usual complaint that - without some eye candy (obviously I'm excluding Alyssa Milano here) - the series is little more than a set-up followed by a quick chant to defeat the bad guys applies. back to the top |
