After Prue provided the main focus of Kiss of Darkness, the second original Charmed novel centres around Phoebe. Out shopping in San Fransisco, the sisters are attacked by a demon and while Prue looks after the injured Piper, Phoebe gives chase, only to vanish in a dead end, leaving a pile of clothes behind. Naturally, her sisters are immediately on the case and after a search, they return to the Manor where the Book of Shadows is sure to provide a solution. Meanwhile, a naked Phoebe ends up in the 17th century where she is rescued from a mob and ends up at the home of Prudence Wentworth. Prudence? Yep, you guessed it and when she discovers a charm that once belonged to Melinda Warren, so too does Phoebe. While Phoebe tries to discover what's happened to the demon who brought her back in time and whether or not Prudence's attitude towards her is mere jealousy, Prue and Piper are arguing, hunting for warlocks, developing new powers and going goth. Are Phoebe's actions in the past changing the present? Unfortunately things dip somewhat after this. The Book of Shadows always provides a handy get out in Charmed, and it's no exception here with the sort of easy solution that would probably have occurred all the time in an American version of Doctor Who. Minus marks too for this "Gram" person who the girls keep referring to without the book - didn't anyone at Pocket Books realise it should have an "s" at the end? I found Whispers From The Past slightly more enjoyable than the first Charmed novel, but it's still nothing much more than a fun runabout. Perhaps that's in keeping with the slightly lightweight nature of the series itself, but it would be nice to see the novels coming up with something a little more challenging now and again. back to the top |
