Kiss of Darkness kicks off the Charmed original fiction range and, unfortunately, it's a pretty average start.

Set on New Year's Eve - presumably 1998 - the three sisters run into a tarot card reader who predicts that darkness will surround Prue, Piper will get noticed and for Phoebe to come into money.

Forced by her boss at Buckland's to go to a party at Lloyd Claiborne's mansion, leaving Piper and Phoebe back at Quake.  And naturally enough, Piper does get noticed.

Of course, it's not all hobnobbing for Prue as a kiss from an unseen stranger starts off a whole chain of events.   Scary stuff huh?

Well, no actually, but Prue does start kissing every guy in sight, even back at Quake, much to the surprise of her sisters.  Even stranger, she regrets it immediately afterwards, and so do they when they start falling ill.

It's not long before Phoebe is running upstairs to flip through the Book of Shadows, while Piper gets to stand up potential new guy Jake time after time, especially when Prue herself falls ill.   Naturally enough, it's down to Piper and Phoebe to track down the source of evil, although Piper's power seems rather more developed than it probably should be, making things rather too easy.

Unsurprisingly, Prue doesn't die and everything gets sorted out within the 180 pages, and there's time for the third of the predictions to come true.

All in all, Kiss of Darkness provides for an untaxing couple of hours reading but nothing more - it's reasonable value if you buy it online (it's under three quid at Amazon UK) but as with the Buffy YA series, it'll probably be £4.99 if you can find it in the high street.

Oh, and the cover is pretty terrible as well. back to the top
