Diana G. Gallagher's follow-up to OBSIDIAN FATE sees Buffy taking a dislike to new teacher Crystal Gregory. Unsurprisingly for a Buffy novel both the Buffster and the readers soon discover that the latest addition to the Sunnydale High faculty is up to no good, and neither are her little clique, which includes Anya and Willow. Willow really should pay more attention, as this isn't the first time she'd been sucked into such shenanigans but fortunately she manages to get out of it with only a minor speech impediment to show for her troubles. There are plenty of continuity references to the TV itself, including the events of DOPPELGANGLAND and GINGERBREAD amongst others. There are also more general ones , such Cordelia's cash problems meaning that she's forced to ask Giles for a job, while Anya is lusting after Xander. Disappointingly, though, there's no sign of Faith or the Mayor or any indication that the events surrounding the pair have even happened, although the fact that Amy is already wheel-bound does play a part in one character's motivations. Overall, PRIME EVIL proved a bit of a disappointment. Both the reader and the Scooby Gang know early on who the cause of the problem is, and it's just a case of how they're going to defeat her. It's not badly written, but it's hardly edge of the seat stuff. BACK TO THE TOP |
