And so we come to the middle third of the BAD BLOOD saga, with issues 13-15 of the Dark Horse BUFFY comics. While the newly-glam Selke plots her masterplan, there's a more pressing concern amongst the Scoobies: Willow's participation in an academic competition. The two plots dovetail with one of her team-mates ruled out due to an attack by Selke's minions. However, there's nothing to worry about with the replacement genius: Cordy! Whilst it's good to see the two plots linked, it is rather unsubtle - Giles tells them not to do something, so Cordy and Xander do it. Still, the scenes where knowledge girl Cordy starts OD-ing on info are worth this plot convenience. With Cordy back to normal, Buffy then becomes the one with problems when she saves Todd (from A NICE GIRL LIKE YOU) from an attack by Selke's followers (note: the blonde one is a bit of a babe). But while Todd starts behaving like a lovesick puppy, Selke's plans to defeat the Slayer are progressing, albeit slowly. There's also a return appearance from Spike and Dru, even though they don't go head to head against the Buffster. Selke's plans form the basis of the final installment, with the Doc having discovered a way to clone the Slayer. Hmmm. Naturally it's dragged out with success only acheived on his very last try. Hadn't expected that at all, I can tell you. Storywise, the BAD BLOOD saga dragged on for far too long, and like the middle episodes of a long DOCTOR WHO story, we're pretty much treading water here. Cordy's knowledge overdose in the first part gives that one added interest, but the rest of it is fairly average. Artwise, it's also nothing special but overall there's enough here to warrant an above average mark (albeit, only just!) BACK TO THE TOP |
