A
slightly misleading title as THE
HOLLOWER Strangely, for a story supposed featuring Angel strongly, it's really part of Dark Horse's BUFFY series, with the odd continuity nod to that series such as Buffy's modelling. So for something entitled ANGEL there's just as much Buffy and Giles as there is Angel. This doesn't really help the story's structure. Originally a three-parter, it might have been better as two one-shots - one with Angel, Dru, Spike and Catherine in 19th century Vienna, and another in present day Sunnydale. That way the whole Hollower story could have been told in one go, instead of via a series of flashbacks. Instead, it's blindingly obvious that the Angel and co. defeat the Hollower, so it's just a case of when rather than if. As previously mentioned, the Sunnydale storyline also features far too of Buffy and Giles, when surely the whole focus of the story should have been Angel? Catherine is an interesting character, but it's a shame that Golden decided to kill her off. Also, some of the dialogue he gives Giles is simply terrible. Artwise, it's a shame the whole thing was drawn by Hector Gomez, as his grasp on the regular characters is mostly awful. Also, why is Catherine depicted as the vampires in the TV series while all her minions coloured green? THE HOLLOWER raises some interesting issues regarding Angel's soul, but Golden's storytelling badly falters after a strong opening. Overall, the whole thing feels pretty average to be honest.
