PLANET SF HOME | BUFFY HOME | BUFFY COMICS | BUFFY FEATURES/FICTION | BUFFY NOVELS

Since SUPERSTAR featured a mocked up JONATHAN comic, it's not particularly surprising that Dark Horse have produced a real version, and they've got the episode's writer Jane Espenson on board as well.

After a recap of the concept of the SUPERSTAR universe we're soon in familiar territory, with Buffy fighting a vampire in the cemetery. Except this is no ordinary vamp, it's an escapee from a Russian establishment vaguely similar to The Initiative.

Naturally any story based around SUPERSTAR is more likely to appeal to fans of the episodes than non-fans such as myself. The night it was first transmitted in the UK you'd think that we'd just witnessed one of the greatest hours in television history to judge from the reaction of some fans.

Of course, it was nothing of the sort. In fact, if it wasn't for the supernatural elements that BUFFY allows for, it was little more than that old chestnut of having a character exaggerate a story for their own ends.

As such I found CODENAME: COMRADES a relatively fun runabout, enlivened by a few good lines from Spike, but nothing more. Those who found the episode better than I did might find the comic more enjoyable, but even so, it's still pretty average. BACK TO THE TOP
