When I reviewed Christopher Golden's novelisation of INTO THE WILD, I gave it a pretty big thumbs up. Due to the fact that the comic series has sat in my "to read" pile for ages, I'd have to reread the novel to see if that opinion still holds, or whether it's just the comic adaptation that disappoints. I suspect it a bit of both. Some of my enthusiasm towards the BUFFY franchises has waned over the past couple of years, but there's no getting away from the fact that I found the comic series a rather uninvolving read. Sadly, this final installment did nothing to change my mind. With Shantou having been captured by Muztag and his cronies, it's up to Oz and Jinan to save him. Will they, and will Oz manage to control the beast inside him? Well, what do you think? The final part sees the usual BUFFY comic confrontation between the good guys - in this case, Oz, Jinan and a couple of others - and this week's Big Bad. There's the added complication of Oz's quest to control the wolf, and a surprise from Shantou, but that's about it. Maybe the story simply doesn't transfer well to this medium, but it hasn't been helped by the artwork. Sometimes it looks fine, but then in the next panel the characters will be shown from a different angle and look plain weird (Jinan is the best - or should that be the worst? - example of this). Overall, a unimpressive end to an unimpressive story. BACK TO THE TOP |
