Set between his leaving Sunnydale after Wild at Heart and his return in NEW MOON RISING, Dark Horse's OZ mini-series sees Willow's former boyfriend searching for a cure in Tibet for his lycanthropic tendencies. Since it's the first part in a trilogy, there's a lot of space devoted to scene setting and introducing the guest characters, notably Oz's companion for the story, the demon-girl Jinan. Things start to pick up towards the end, with the pair searching for a monk, and finding a trail of dead bodies, but the story is hardly rivetting stuff at this stage. Oz's non-talkative nature is reflected in the limited amount of speech during his and Jinan's journey, which helps things move along fairly quickly. It's not helped by some artwork that makes you wonder if BUFFY newcomer Logan Lubera has actually seen the show since his likeness of Oz leaves a lot to be desired. Photo-realism is one thing, but most readers would expect the lead character to look something like the actor who plays him on television. Not a particularly good start then, so we can only hope that now that the introductions are over, things will be picking up over the next two installments. BACK TO THE TOP |
