When we left Melaka Fray, a big demon was hiding behind the door as she returned home. Turns out that he's there to tell her that she's the Chosen One, rather than fight her.

Of course, Mel isn't too impressed with this news. She's no idea what he's talking about and hasn't had the dreams about past slayers (nice nod to Buffy Summers there as well). The result: she goes off on a job instead.

Despite the futuristic trappings, the story so far has a lot of similiarities to BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER - the malapropisms, the dreams (although as already mentioned Melaka hasn't had these), her late calling, and the fact that she's initially sceptical before events force her to come around. In fact, she's initially completely dismissive of Urkonn until she realises that he might have been talking sense after all.

This is perhaps understandable. After all, how many different Slayer "origin" stories are they? Either the Slayer accepts her responsibilities or she doesn't, and if a Slayer hasn't been called for some time then it's more likely that she woudn't. At least initially.

The "origin" side of things also helps Joss Whedon introduce us to Melaka's world and the other characters. As before, the likes of Mel's sister Erin and Loo only have small roles, but they help to fill in some new Slayer's background.

The artwork continues to be good, showing off Mel and the rest of her world. Even Urkonn who might have ended up looking like just another crap demon in the ANGEL series looks okay.

THE CALLING ends with our heroine appearing to accept her destiny, thus setting things up for the rest of the series - a series that I'm very much looking forward to on the basis of the first two installments. BACK TO THE TOP
