PLANET SF HOME | BUFFY HOME | BUFFY COMICS | BUFFY FEATURES/FICTION | BUFFY NOVELS

Dark Horse's first post-Dawn arc has been better than I'd expected, although it's been helped along by flashbacks to some early television adventures with Buffy's new found sister now part of the action.

However, unlike the first three installments, REMEMBER THE END doesn't feature a flashback, and this does cause problems,

Part three certainly set things up nicely for this final installment, with Xander the target of the Japanese vampire monks and Yuki about to resurrect the Master. Meanwhile, Spike seemed intent on delivering Buffy into the hands of the Slayer-turned-vampire.

The main problem is that, without the flashbacks, the story ends in the same way that a lot of other BUFFY comic stories have - the bad guys are performing a ritual of some kind and the Scooby Gang arrive to thwart their plans.

Even allowing for the fact that there are only so many ways to end a BUFFY story, there are a few too many obvious elements about REMEMBER THE END to make it really enjoyable. Since the story has been about Dawn, it was also a strong possibility that she'd save the day, but having her spying on the Scoobies effectively telegraphed the whole thing.

That said, it's not all bad. The story might be a little obvious, but it's still fairly enjoyable. It's good to see Spike getting his comeuppance, and the Master's final words manage to keep up the mystery of Dawn's identity.

Art-wise, it's also pretty good, although the same old problems of a lack of detail of people that aren't front and centre.

Overall, a decent enough conclusion, but it's rather apparent that the first three issues were boosted by the flashback scenes. BACK TO THE TOP
