When reviewing HIVE MENTALITY, I remarked that the "shock" revelation was going to involve either bug expert Dr Whitcomb or Giles' new girlfriend Rebecca. Well, let's just say, that I was right... An awful lot of time is spent in the bug creatures' caves, with the Scooby Gang liberally spraying around Tara's magic bug spray and getting a bit of an info-dump about the things. Meanwhile - and unfortunately - Riley recovers and after escaping from the hospital, goes looking for Spike. The vampire formerly known as Hostile 17 has clearly known more than he's said so far, and we finally discover just what that is. OUT OF THE FIRE, INTO THE HIVE is a rather disappointing end to the Hive story. Okay, so we learn a bit more about the bugs and what the crystals that Spike knows about actually do, but it was still pretty much a given that the Scoobies would defeat the bugs. Once this is out of the way, we get a round-up back on the streets of Sunnydale. The not-very-interesting Rebecca turns up with a not-very-convincing alibi for disappearing for half the story. Of course, it might well be true, in which case you have to wonder why Fassbender and Pascoe bothered including her in the story in the first place. And if it isn't true, then the "suspense" better be worth it. Artwise, this is about the same as previous installments. Objects that are front and centre aren't too bad, but if they're in the distance, then you can pretty much forget about it. Overall, the Hive storyline wasn't the most original BUFFY comic plot, but even so, the ending was pretty lacklustre as far as I was concerned. BACK TO THE TOP |
