PLANET SF HOME | BUFFY HOME | BUFFY COMICS | BUFFY FEATURES/FICTION | BUFFY NOVELS

Following on from LOST AND FOUND, INVASION sees Riley Finn at his most interesting yet. Yep, you guessed it - he's still in a coma. Sorry, couldn't resist that one...

Meanwhile, the various plot strands from last month continue as an ex-Initiative colleague of Riley's visits the formerly haunted alley and Giles goes on a date with Rebecca.

Not only does this cause friction with Buffy, but it also splits the Scooby Gang. Anya, Tara and Willow think she's creepy, but Xander thinks she's a "good-looking babe", although the artwork doesn't really bear this out.

The alleyway might not be haunted any more, but that doesn't mean there's not something going on, with Sunnydale now infested by giant insects.

This storyline dovetails into the Giles/Rebecca one in a couple of ways, as her ex-boyfriend crops up on TV to explain about it, and then she and Giles come face to face with the by-now infected agent, while Buffy and Spike meet a big bug.

Plot-wise, INVASION is okay, but nothing great. I doubt if many fans will shed a tear for Riley's predicament, and since I doubt the comic books will deviate too far from the TV series it's unlikely he'll be killed off. However, at least he's out of the way for now.

Either Xander's got a strange definition of the word "babe" or Rebecca has been drawn a bit crap (which is probably more likely). It's difficult to get excited about her in any way - either her presence in the comic in the first place, or her disappearance later on. From the outset she seemed likely to be related to this month's big bad or to be cannon fodder, so the chances are she's only a short-term character.

The artwork fails to lift an average story into something more interesting. Rebecca not living upto Xander's "babe" tag is perhaps debatable, but what's more obvious is the poor artwork for the Scooby Gang, especially the female ones. Buffy is okay, but the other three look nothing like the actresses concerned and are also poorly drawn anyway, with a complete lack of detail unless they're firmly in the foreground.

All in all, yet another average comic outing for the Buffster. BACK TO THE TOP
