The
first volume of Dark Horse's ANGEL comic
series signs off with in fairly typical style - with another below par
offering. Disappointing, yes, but hardly surprising. After all, if the
series had been hitting the mark month after month, it wouldn't have been
pulled.
As
the title suggests, the story revolves around Cordelia. More specifically,
Angel and Wesley entrust her with the Heart of Jonnas since her apartment
is the safest place to keep it (the story's set after the destruction
of the original Angel Investigations offices), before buggering off to
kill some demons.
Left
alone with Phantom Dennis, Cordy is more interested in a long hot bath,
but needs to stash the jar containing the heart first. So, unimaginatively,
she bungs it in her underwear drawer. After all, as the demon who comes
looking for it says, "nobody ever thinks of [that]".
The
bulk of the story concerns the demon's attempt to recover the heart, and
Cordelia and Dennis' attempts to stop him.
So,
storywise, it's a bit of a non-event. Cordy and Dennis throw a few things
at the demon and whack it with a few objects, before Angel and Wes arrive
at the end. On the plus side, at least Cordy is afforded the ability to
off the demon herself (well, with a little help) rather than simply waiting
for the two guys to turn up.
I've
rarely been overly impressed by the artwork in the ANGEL comics, and there's no change here. Personally, I don't think the style
suits a Cordelia-orientated story, especially since Cordy doesn't look
a lot like Charisma Carpenter.
Although
the ANGEL series has rarely fired on all
cylinders, it would have been nice to have finished on a high. Sadly that
wasn't the case, so let's hope that volume 2 is better. back to the top
