After
the events of CHAPTER 1,
both Kate Lockley the LAPD and Angel and Wesley are exploring the tunnels
beneath the City of Angels, on the trail of the city's latest serial killer.
While
the cops are being wiped out by a familiar-looking demon with huge horns,
Wes and Angel run into the misshapen Abner, still bloody from his snack
of live rat. Naturally Wesley jumps to the wrong conclusion, leaving an
injured Abner to stumble off into the darkness while the pair check out
his lair.
The
fact that the murderer seemed to be framing Angel implied some sort of
history between the pair, and at least Christopher Golden avoids the old
favourite of someone from his distant past returning. There's also a brief
return to the used bookstore that we also saw in the EARTHLY
POSSESSIONS storyline.
The
characterisation is pretty good, with Wesley still going by the book,
and Kate still preferring to shoot demons regardless of what they've done,
but I'm still not convinced by Eric Powell's art.
All-in-all,
a fairly decent conclusion to the storyline, without ever being too great.
We never really discovered much about Abner, so he could be set for a
return appearance sometime.
One
final question - if Kate took the murderer's body back to the surface
sans head, why doesn't anyone appear to ask what happened to it, and how
come they're only concerned with the number of fingers it has when it
seemed not only huge but green as well?
