GRADUATION
ADDED: 15.05.02. SOURCE: ZAP2IT

CBS won Tuesday's ratings race by the slimmest of margins, averaging an 8.7 rating/14 share for the night. The Eye finished just a tenth of a point ahead of NBC, 8.6/14. ABC, 7.6/12, was a solid third, while Fox averaged a 4.8/8. The WB earned a solid 4.9/7 in the metered markets, beating UPN's 3.1/5.

NBC scored a big win among adults 18-49 with a 5.2 rating. Fox was second with a 4.1, followed by ABC, 4.0, and CBS, 3.0.

JAG won the 8pm hour for CBS with an 8.6/14, a fraction ahead of the special NBC's Funniest Outtakes, 8.5/14. Part 3 of the ABC miniseries Dinotopia was third. The WB's Gilmore Girls, 4.7/7, managed to beat back-to-back episodes of That 70s Show on Fox, which averaged 4.4/8. UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer earned a 4.0/6.

NBC took the 9pm hour with the night's top show, Frasier, 11.2/17, and Scrubs, 8.2/12. The Guardian, 8.3/13, finished second for CBS, followed by the conclusion of Dinotopia, 7.7/12. The penultimate episode of 24 on Fox averaged a 5.3/8. The WB's Smallville, 5.0/7, easily beat the series finale of Roswell, 2.3/3, on UPN.

CBS reclaimed the top spot at 10pm with Judging Amy, 9.3/15. ABC's NYPD Blue, 8.1/13, finished ahead of Dateline NBC, 7.7/12.

Ratings information provided is from fast national data, except for UPN and The WB, which are the results of the overnight metered markets (the top 50 markets across the country). All numbers are preliminary and subject to change. BACK TO THE TOP

FOUR ALIENS AND A BABY
ADDED: 08.05.02

The penultimate episode of Roswell finished in last place in the overnight metered market ratings, well adrift of the competition.

CBS won the hour, with The Guardian, 8.6 rating/13 share, ahead of NBC's pairing of Frasier, 9.7/14, and Scrubs, 7.3/10.

ABC was third, with Favorite Stars: Then and Now pulling a 9.0/13, followed by Fox's 24, 5.8/8. The WB's Smallville took fifth, with a 5.1/7, followed by Roswell, with a fairly typical 2.4/3. BACK TO THE TOP

CRASH
ADDED: 01.05.02. SOURCE: ZAP2IT

Even though NBC heavily promoted its Tuesday night 75th anniversary programming, the peacock network still couldn't beat CBS, which received a 10.3 share/16 average for the night. Meanwhile, NBC pulled in an 8.6/13, followed by The WB (5.2/8), Fox (5.1/8) and UPN (3.0/4).

CBS was also able to capture the highest rating among adults aged 18-49 with a 5.0. Fox followed with a 4.5, NBC received a 4.3 and ABC pulled in a 3.0.

At 8pm, CBS' JAG received a 9.0/15 to narrowly beat out NBC's special Bob Hope's Funniest Outtakes (8.9/15). On Fox, the first two episodes of a night filled with That '70s Show received a 4.8 and 5.4 rating respectively. Back-to-back episodes of ABC's Dharma & Greg received a 4.8/8 and 4.9/8 respectively. Meanwhile, The WB's Gilmore Girls pulled in a 5.1/8, followed by UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer (3.6/5).

At 9pm, CBS' Living With the Dead, Part 2 led the way with an 11.0/17 average to round out the network's primetime programming. On NBC, the Frasier episode that featured members of the Cheers cast pulled in a 10.6/16, followed by Scrubs (7.2/11), which featured some of the cast of St. Elsewhere. Back-to-back episodes of ABC's Spin City received a 4.3/6 and 5.1/8 respectively, while a second set of back-to-back episodes of That '70s Show on Fox pulled in a 5.3/8 and 4.8/7 respectively. Smallville on The WB recewived a 5.3/8 while UPN's Roswell averaged a 2.4/3.

In the 10 o'clock block, NBC's special The Tonight Show's 10th Anniversary received an 8.0/13 average, followed by ABC's NYPD Blue (7.0/11). BACK TO THE TOP

WHO DIED AND MADE YOU KING?
ADDED: 24.04.02

Roswell returned to UPN last night, but the viewers didn't, as the show was again the least watched show on any of the six major networks according to the overnight metered market ratings.

NBC won the 9pm hour, with repeats of Frasier, 8.5 rating/12 share, and Scrubs, 6.5/9, which was enough to see off the challenge from CBS's The Guardian, 6.6/10, although this did edge out NBC for the 9.30pm half-hour.

ABC was third, with a repeat of Philly, 6.2/9, ahead of Fox's 24, 6.0/9. As usual, The WB's Smallville, 4.8/9, was well ahead of Roswell's 2.0 rating/3 share. The return of new Buffy episodes from next week might spark a slight ratings rise for Roswell, but the series could well be ending with a damp squib ratings-wise. BACK TO THE TOP

ROSWELL REPLACEMENTS SLUMP

06.03.02 - Roswell might be on hiatus until April, but if UPN was planning to permanently replace it with As If and Random Years, it may think again after the shows' premieres pulled dismal ratings.

Following on from Buffy's 4.3 rating/7 share, As If lost 56% of its lead-in, with a 1.9 rating/3 share, followed by Random Years' 1.5/2.  The two series trailed a repeat of The WB's Smallville, 4.1/6, by an average of 59%.  Back to the top

CHANT DOWN BABYLON

27.02.02 - Roswell returned to UPN before its break in March and as usual finished in sixth place for the 9pm hour.

NBC won the hour, with Frasier, 12.6 rating/18 share and Scrubs, 8.6/12, followed by ABC's NYPD Blue, 8.6/12.

CBS' The Guardian was third, with an 8.3 rating/12 share, ahead of Fox's 24, 6.6/9.

The WB was fifth with Smallville (5.3/8) comfortably ahead of Roswell's 2.4/3.  Back to the top

RATINGS FOR PANACEA

13.02.02 - Roswell was again the least watched network programme in yesterday's overnight metered market ratings.

NBC won the night, with the ratings for its Winter Olympics coverage peaking in the 9pm hour, with a 20.0 rating/30 share.

CBS was a distant second, with a repeat of The Guardian pulling a 6.5/9 (8.5/12), just ahead of Fox's 24, 6.5/9 (6.9/10).

The WB's Smallville was the only show to improve its ratings from the previous week, rising from a 5.4 rating/8 share to a 5.7/8.

Two repeats of Whose Line is it Anyway both pulled a 4.5/6 for ABC (NYPD Blue, 8.7/12), with Roswell's 2.4/3 (2.5/4) rounding out the pack again.  Back to the top

NO RATINGS CH-CH-CHANGES

06.02.02 - As usual, Roswell was well adrift of the pack in Tuesday's overnight metered market ratings.

NBC won the hour with Frasier, 13.5/19 and Scrubs, 9.1/13 - the latter being tied with ABC's NYPD Blue (8.7/12) for the back half-hour.  CBS's The Guardian was third with an 8.5 rating/12 share.

Fox's 24 improved off the back of lead-in That 70s Show, pulling a 6.9/10.  The WB was fifth, with Smallville, 5.4/8, which was 116% ahead of Roswell's 2.5/4.  Back to the top

I MARRIED AN ALIEN

30.01.02 - Despite The WB and UPN being the only networks not showing the State of the Union Address, Roswell still finished at the back of the pack in last night's overnight metered market ratings.

NBC's transmission of the address was the most watched, with a 9.8 rating/14 share (Frasier, 10.0/15 and Scrubs, 8.7/13), edging out ABC (NYPD Blue, 6.5/10).

CBS was third, despite having the best lead-in, slipping from a 7.9/11 at 8pm to 7.5/10 for 9pm (last week: The Guardian, 9.5/14).

The WB rose to fourth, with Smallville building on its lead-in on its way to a 6.1/9 (4.2/6).  Roswell, with a 2.8/4, was up on last week's Buffy repeat (2.3/3), but still bottom of the pile for the night as a whole.  Back to the top

ROSWELL AIRS NEW EP, BUT FINISHES LAST

02.01.02 - With the exception of ABC's broadcast of the Sugar Bowl, Roswell was the only show not airing a repeat last night, and the series still ended up in last place.

ABC won the 9pm hour, with coverage of Illinois vs. LSU, which averaged an 8.3/12 from 8.30-11pm.

CBS was second with The Guardian, 8.1/11, followed by NBC with repeats of Frasier (7.1/10) and Scrubs (4.4.6).  In fourth place was Fox with The Bernie Mac Show (5.6/8) and Grounded For Life (4.4/6), followed by the second part of a Gilmore Girls double on The WB, 4.0/6.

A Tale of Two Parties rounded out all six networks, with a 2.4 rating/4 share, although at least it retained the majority who watched the repeat of Buffy (2.5/4) beforehand.  Back to the top

SAMUEL RISING, BUT RATINGS AREN'T

19.12.01 - Despite two networks airing repeats in the 9pm slot, a new episode of Roswell still ended up the least watched show of both the hour and the night as a whole.

NYPD Blue won the hour according to the overnight metered market ratings, with a 9.4 rating/14 share (last week: 9.7/14).

NBC was second, with a repeat of Frasier pulling an 8.8/13 (10.7/16), followed by a repeat of Scrubs, 6.6/10 (7.8/11).

CBS was in third place, thanks to The Guardian, 7.5/11 (7.8/12), followed by Fox's 24, 5.5/8 (5.4/8).

The WB aired a repeat of Smallville, but even though this dropped to 3.9/6 (5.8/8), this was still more than enough to beat a new episode of Roswell, which pulled just a 2.4/4 (1.8/3).  However, this was at least up from last week's repeat rating, which saw the series pull just 1.83 million and last place for the week as a whole.  Back to the top

ROSWELL UP SLIGHTLY, BUT STILL LAST

28.11.01 - Roswell's ratings were up slightly in last night's overnight metered market ratings, but the series still finished in last place for the 9pm hour.

NBC won the hour, with Frasier pulling a 12.8 rating/18 rating (last week: 11.1/16) at 9pm, followed by Scrubs with a 9.9/14 (8.1/12) at 9.30pm.

ABC was second, with NYPD Blue, 10.0/14 (9.1/13), with CBS in third place thanks to The Guardian, 8.6/12 (8.3/12).

Fox's 24 was up from last week's 5.8/9 to 6.5/9, but this was still down 12% on the equivalent Dark Angel episode last year.

24 narrowly beat out The WB's Smallville, 5.9/8 (5.5/8), for fourth place, with Roswell again well adrift, although its 2.7 rating/4 share was up slightly from last week's 2.6/4.  Back to the top

RATINGS STEADY, BUT ROSWELL LAST AGAIN

21.11.01 - Roswell's ratings were steady in last night's overnight metered market ratings, but once again the show finished in last place for the 9pm hour.

NBC won the hour, thanks to Frasier, 11.1 rating/16 share (last week: 13.3/15), and Scrubs, 8.1/12 (Frasier retrospective, 13.5/19).

ABC edged out CBS for second place, with NYPD Blue pulling a 9.1/13 (9.2/13) vs. The Guardian, 8.3/12 (Michael Jackson 30th Anniversary Celebration, 16.5/24).

Fox's 24 slipped once again, down to 5.8/9 (6.2/9), while The WB's Smallville was up to 5.5/8 (5.1/7).  Roswell again finished in last place, with just a 2.6 rating/4 share of the audience.  Back to the top

RATINGS SLIP FOR TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

14.11.01 - Roswell again finished in last place for the night as a whole (and lead-in Buffy The Vampire Slayer was only one place above it) as the ratings for To Have And To Hold slipped slightly from last week.

CBS and NBC were neck and neck for the hour thanks to specials.  CBS aired Michael Jackson: 30th Annivery Celebration from 9-11pm, averaging a 16.5 rating/24 share overall.  The ratings built over the two hours, rising in half hour blocks: 13.5/19 - 14.7/20 - 18.8/28 - 19.0/30.

The 200th episode of Frasier pulled a 13.3/19 (11.0/15) at 9pm, followed by a retrospective at 9.30pm, 13.5/19 (last week: Scrubs, 7.9/11).

Over on ABC, NYPD Blue (9.2/13) was well down from last week's 12.0/18.  Fox's 24 also took a hit, down from 8.4/12 to 6.2/9, as did The WB's Smallville, 5.1/7 (5.9/9).

Roswell was again well down on its lead-in Buffy, slipping from last week's 2.8/4 to 2.6/4 this week.  Back to the top

ROSWELL UP BUT STILL LAST

07.11.01 - Roswell's overnight ratings were up for the first Tuesday of November sweeps, but the series still finished last for the night as a whole.

The season premiere of ABC's NYPD Blue pulled an average of 12.0/18 from 9-11pm, and was the most watched programme of the night as a whole.  However, it lost out to NBC's Frasier (11.0/15 to 10.9/15) for the 9-9.30pm half-hour, although NBC dropped off from 9.30-10pm with Scrubs dropping to a 7.9 rating/12 share (last week, 8.3/12).

Fox's much-hyped 24 debuted to an 8.4 rating/12 share, while CBS's The Guardian was down from last week's 8.2/12 to 7.5/10.

The WB's Smallville improved on Gilmore Girls' audience to a 5.9/9 (5.8/8), while Roswell was up 12% to 2.8/4 (2.5/4).  Back to the top

ROSWELL LAST, SMALLVILLE STILL STELLAR

31.10.01 - For the third time this season, Roswell went head-to-head with The WB's Smallville and for the third time this season, Roswell was soundly beaten.

Fox took the night as a whole, with their coverage of the World Series (New York Yankees vs. Arizona Diamondbacks) averaging a 16.9/25 overall.

NBC was second for the hour, with Frasier pulling an 11.5 rating/16 share, followed by Scrubs with an 8.3/12.

CBS, second for the night as a whole, saw its ratings hold up well, and overall was down just 8% on last week.  In the 9pm hour, The Guardian pulled an 8.2 rating/12 share.

ABC started the hour with Dharma and Greg, 6.0/8, followed by a repeat of the premiere of Alias from 9.30-11pm, which averaged 4.7/7.

Smallville was up 21% on its lead-in Gilmore Girls (which again beat Buffy) on its way to a 5.8 rating/8 share, more than double Roswell's 2.5/4.  Smallville's metered market ratings so far have been 6.2/9, 5.9/9 and 5.8/8, showing its impressive audience retention.  Back to the top

ROSWELL PLACES LAST AGAIN

26.10.01 - Roswell again finished last in the overnight metered market ratings for Tuesday, with Smallville's ratings holding up remarkably well over on The WB.

CBS won the 9pm hour, thanks to The Guardian, 10.9 rating/16 share (last week: 10.5/16), comfortably ahead of NBC, with Frasier, 8.7/13 (10.0/15) and Scrubs, 7.1/11.

ABC were third, with two helpings of Spin City.  The first episode at 9pm, pulled a 6.2 rating/9 share (5.2/8), followed by a repeat episode at 9.30pm, which improved to a 6.5/10 (last week: Bob Patterson, 4.9/7).

The WB finished fourth for the hour, with Smallville holding onto most of its viewers onto a 5.9 rating/9 share (6.7/10 for last week's premiere).

Fox aired a repeat of Dark Angel's season two premiere, 2.9/4 (Love Cruise: The Maiden Voyage, 4.7/8).  Roswell pulled the same figures as last week, 2.8/4.  Back to the top

ROSWELL RATINGS SLUMP

17.10.01 - After last week's disappointing figures, Roswell's ratings slumped even lower last night, with Smallville pulling in some impressive figures for The WB.

CBS won the 9pm again, with The Guardian scoring a 10.5 rating/16 share.  NBC was next, with a 10.0/15 for Frasier at 9pm, followed by Scrubs with an 8.1/12.

On The WB, the premiere of Smallville pulled in a 6.7 rating/10 share, on its way to third place for the hour.  ABC was fourth, with Spin City, 5.2/8 and Bob Paterson, 4.9/7.  Fox's Love Cruise: The Maiden Voyage finished its run with a 4.7/8, with Roswell well adrift with just a 2.8/4 (last week: 3.6/5).  Back to the top

DISAPPOINTING START FOR BUSTED

11.10.01 - Roswell's third season got off to a disappointing start ratings-wise, finishing sixth in the 9-10pm timeslot.

NBC won the hour, thanks to Frasier's 11.4 rating/16 share (last week: 12.6/18), followed by Scrubs, 8.4/12 (10.8/15).

CBS was second, with The Guardian, 8.7/13 (9.2/13), with ABC third, thanks to Bob Patterson, 5.6/8 (7.1/10) and Spin City, 6.6/9 (7.5/11).

Roswell's old network, The WB, averaged 5.0/7 from 8-10pm, but was held back to a 4.7/7 from 8-9pm.  The second hour of the two-hour season opener helped the network to fourth place, ahead of Fox's Love Cruise: The Maiden Voyage, 5.0/7 (5.3/8).

Roswell rounded out the pack, with a disappointing 3.6 rating/5 share off the back of Buffy's 4.9/7 from 8-9pm.  The real test will come next week when Roswell is up against the premiere of The WB's Smallville.
