CRITICAL ASSEMBLY ON NBC
ADDED: 7 JULY 2003

Back in December 2001, we reported that NBC had shelved indefinity its TV movie GROUND ZERO following the events of September 11th.

Now retitled CRITICAL ASSEMBLY, the movie is due to air on Saturday 12 July, at 9pm/8pm. The network describes it as follows:

"In this heart-pounding NBC original movie, four globally minded college students secretly build a nuclear device just to prove how easy it is. However, when real terrorists steal the bomb, it's a race against time to find and disarm it. Katherine Heigl (ROSWELL), Kerr Smith (DAWSON'S CREEK) and Michael Beach (THIRD BEACH) co-star." LOVES COMES SOFTLY AND WUTHERING HEIGHTS, CA
ADDED: 23 APRIL 2003

According to the NEW YORK POST, Hallmark's original movie, LOVE COMES SOFTLY, notched a record audience of 3.1 million households for the channel. Katherine had the leading role as Marty Claridge.

Meanwhile, Katie is set to star in a modernised take on Emily Bronte's classic novel Wuthering Heights for MTV.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS, CA is slated for a 6 May start in Puerto Rico and will also star Erika Christensen (who starred alongside Shiri Appleby in SWIMFAN and who also appeared in TRAFFIC), Mike Vogel (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) and Christopher Masterson (MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE).

The film relocates the story to "the tumultuous Mendocino coastline" for the story of a girl who falls for a poor musician but very unhappily weds the scion of a wealthy family instead. BACK TO THE TOP

EVIL NEVER DIES AND LOVE COMES SOFTLY
ADDED: 31.03.03. SOURCE: TBS SUPERSTATION

A couple of months ago, we reported that Katherine had been cast in a remake of Frankenstein that was being developed by TBS.

The station's website now has more details about the film, which premieres in the States on 1 June:

He was a violent criminal, destroying countless lives before being executed for his trangressions on humanity. Now, advanced science is giving him life once again...and the chance to enact his bloody revenge.

Thomas Gibson (Dharma and Greg) and Katherine Heigl (Roswell) star in the TBS Supersation Original Movie, Evil Never Dies, a modern-day variation on the Frankenstein story with a dark twist. Gibson plays a police officer who loses his wife at the hands of a brutal murderer. After being transferred to patrol duty at a prestigious college, Gibson discovers that the now-executed murderer is part of a professor's strange experiment that results in his being brought back to life, his murderous drive still intact. Heigl plays the professor's assistant.

We also reported that Katie was starring in Love Comes Softly for Hallmark. The TVM airs in the US on 13 April, and the channel has now released the complete synopsis for the production:

"A woman's dream to forge a new life for herself on the great American plains becomes a test of her pioneering spirit, her inner strength, and her undying faith. By covered wagon, Marty (Katherine Heigl, Roswell) and Aaron Claridge (Oliver Macready, That '70s Show) have come west in search of fortune. But unforeseen tragedy leaves Marty a widow facing bleak prospects for the future. With a bitter winter season approaching and no safe passage back home, she finds herself stranded yet befriended by settlers Ben Graham (Golden Globe nominee Corbin Bernsen, L.A. Law) and his wife Sarah (Theresa Russell, Black Widow). They encourage her to take up widower Clark Davis (Dale Midkiff, Nancy Drew) on his unusual offer - join him in a temporary marriage of convenience. Marty will have a roof over her head until the spring thaw when she can return home. In the meantime, Clark's nine-year-old daughter Missie (Skye McCole Bartusiak, Don't Say a Word) will have a teacher.

As promised, the arrangement is strictly business. However, teaching Missie, who's still grieving for her mother, becomes as challenging as living with Clark, a man cutt off from his emotions. For three people, each mourning someone they've lost, comfort comes from sharing their pain and hardships. But is it enough to make two lonely hearts recognise what they really need and want? As the seasons pass, and Marty gets closer to the day of her departure, she finally discovers the meaning of courage, her inner faith, a love she never thought possible, and the bittersweet truth in her friend Sarah's sage advice: Bloom where you're planted.

Based on Janette Oke's cherished best-selling series of books, and written and directed by Michael Landon, Jr., this inspiring love story of a more innocent time is illuminated by the same warmth and wisdom that made Little House on the Prairie such enduring family entertainment. BACK TO THE TOP

KATIE NEWS ROUND-UP
ADDED: 29.01.03

With the site getting a few news updates recently, it's a good time to round up a few news snippets about Katherine.

On 7 January, Katie attended the 2003 National Cable & Telecommunications Association Press Tour event in Hollywood. Thirty cable networks presented programmes to more than 130 television critics during the three-day (January 6-8) cable portion of the "tour" at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel.

Katherine was there promoting her new project Love Comes Softly, in which she plays Marty Claridge, and which will air on 13 April on the (US) Hallmark Channel.

Meanwhile, the movie Wish Upon a Star, in which Katherine plays Alexis Wheaton, will be re-issued in the US in a DVD double-pack with Little Secrets (both were directed by Blair Treu) on 4 February.

Finally, according to yesterday's New York Daily News: Thomas Gibson (Dharma and Greg) will star in a remake of the classic Frankenstein, being developed by TBS. "Former Roswell star Katherine Heigl" will also appear in the film. BACK TO THE TOP

ROMY AND MICHELE PREQUEL CASTS HEIGL
ADDED: 02.10.02. SOURCE: ZAP2IT

Katherine Heigl is going from Roswell to Hollywood, circa 1987, reports Zap2it.

Katie has been cast as Romy in ABC's Romy and Michele: Behind the Velvet Rope, a prequel to the 1997 feature film Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. Alex Breckenridge will play Michele.

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow played Romy and Michele, respectively, in the movie.

Behind the Velvet Rope flashes back 10 years from the movie, to just after Romy and Michele's graduation. They quickly pack their things nad leave their hometown of Tuscon, Arizona, for the glitz of Hollywood. There, they embark on a three-year quest to gain entrance to the town's hottest club.

Kelly Brook (Smallville) also stars.

In addition to Roswell, Heigl has starred in Valentine and My Father The Hero, among other films. She will also star in an episode of UPN's Twilight Zone this season. Breckenridge is a relative newcomer, with guest roles on Undeclared and Charmed (as Michelle Miglis in A Paige From the Past) and the movie Big Fat Liar to her credit.

Robin Schiff, who wrote the screenplay to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, is writing and directing the prequel. She'll also serve as an executive producer. BACK TO THE TOP

NBC SHELVES GROUND ZERO

05.12.01 - According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the NBC TVM Ground Zero, which stars Katie, has been shelved indefinitely as a result of the 11 September terrorist attacks.

"I'm disappointed," Katie said.  "You don't want to be insensitive to what went on.  But I'm not sure I feel that the movie is insensitive."

In addition to having the unfortunate title that's been bestowed on the site of the Twin Towers attack, Ground Zero "deals with terrorism and nuclear weapons," explained Katie.  "But it's a different story because the terrorists are Americans who are part of the @!#$ [sic] or militia...I play a nuclear physicist, and three college guys lure me into helping them build a nuclear bomb to show that if we can do it there need to be stricter laws.  Things get out of hand, and the weapon gets stolen by terrorists."

However, Katie is hopeful that Ground Zero will eventually see the light of day.  Her research for the part included "reading books like The Tao of Physics.  We also had a physicist on set who would talk us through the process while we were building the bomb...But the story didn't get so detailed that everybody can just go into their garage and build a bomb."  BACK TO THE TOP

US WEEKLY: KATHERINE HEIGL

03.08.01 - From US Weekly, 30 July:

Katherine Heigl

The 22-year-old star of Roswell talks about stepping out in Hollywood with her necesssary accessory.

Are these glasses part of your everyday look?

I'm nearsighted and contacts kill my eyes, so I have to wear them.  I love this pair - I can dress them up or down.  The Mossimo party [to which she wore them the night the accompanying photo was taken] was casual, and I liked the way I looked.

Will you wear your glasses out more often?

Definitely, though it depends on the outfit.  That night, I was wearing dark jeans and a black turtleneck, so it worked very well.  I ended up looking a lot more intellectual, which is always good to try to pull off.

Would you wear the glasses even if you didn't need them?

Probably not.  It's a pain in the butt to have to remember to wear them every time I go to a movie or driving.  BACK TO THE TOP

KATIE'S SOPHISTICATED NEW LOOK

23.07.01 - As the photos of Katherine at the Legally Blonde premiere show, she's sporting a new look, having cut her familiar long, blonde hair and dieing it brown.

"I actually did it for a role that fell through ... [that] called for a more sophisticated look," she said, adding that she had been lobbying The WB to let her shear her locks for a while.  The network, possibly nervous after Felicity star Keri Russell's hair change, wouldn't have it.  When word came of the move to UPN, she said, "I just went for it.  I've been wanting to cut my hair forever!  I just think it looks better.  I'm a better brunette than blonde, I think."  BACK TO THE TOP

KATIE AT LEGALLY BLONDE PREMIERE

10.07.01 - Here's a rather stylishly looking Katherine snapped at the premiere of Legally Blonde on 26 June (unlike co-star Majandra Delfino who was charged by E! Online's Fashion Police for the umpteenth time).

US FHM SEXIEST WOMEN POLL

08.06.01 - Katie was unable to repeat her Top 30 placing from the UK edition's poll in the US FHM Sexiest Women poll, coming in at number 71.  As with the UK poll, she was the only Roswell regular featured and as with the UK poll, it was yet again won by Jennifer Lopez, although season one recurring star, as well as Buffy and Angel's Darla, Julie Benz, was placed 90th.

Here's the magazine's blurb about Katie:

Katherine got her humble start years ago modelling for the Sears catalogue.  Although some would argue that her rise to prominence kicked into high gear with her compelling performance as Jade in Bride of Chucky, it was more likely her role as superhuman Isabel Evans on TV's Roswell that launched her to stardom.  BACK TO THE TOP

KATIE MAKES FHM TOP 30

19.05.01 - Katherine was voted into 30th place in FHM's Sexiest Women Top 100 poll, which was published yesterday (and somehow won by Jennifer Lopez).  Other sci-fi/fantasy actresses featured include Buffy's Alyson Hannigan (10th) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (11th), Dark Angel's Jessica Alba (19th), Angel's Charisma Carpenter (27th) and Charmed's Alyssa Milano (57th).

Hopefully next year's poll (or "fix" as many online posters seem to believe it is) will see an even better performance by Katie as well as the likes of Shiri making the Top 100.   BACK TO THE TOP

KATHERINE HEIGL, HOLLYWOOD'S RISING STAR

14.05.01 - Katherine Heigl's striking looks had her modelling at a young age and as she's gotten older her list of accomplishmnets has grown tremendously.  You've seen her in quite a few films such as My Father The Hero, Wish Upon a Star and Valentine but you probably know her best as Isabel on the WB's Roswell.

Teen.com caught up with Katie on the set of Roswell to find out more about her life as an actress, what it's like to be on a hit show and what she does in her "spare" time.

Click here to read the full article (some very mild general season 2 spoilers for BBC2 viewers but nothing to worry about), but in the meantime, here's an excerpt:

Teen.com: Do you have anything in the works for your time off from Roswell?

Katie: There are a couple of things we are working on but nothing is definite yet.  It's hard because we end work in April and many films are starting before then so they can be out before the strike.  It's a difficult time for actors right now.

Teen.com: Does the WB have cast parties for you guys so you can meet the actors and actresses from the other shows?

Katie: Sometimes, it's kind of strange at first.  It's like you have these different cliques from different shows and it's just like high school.  The shows that have been around the longest are the seniors and they know the most people and the shows that are just starting are the freshman.  It is so much fun though.  We all got together in NY last summer for a WB party and we got to meet all of the people who are on the same network as us.  It was strange because you felt like you should know all of these people but you don't.  There are a lot of really cool people on some of these shows.

Teen.com: What was making Valentine like?

Katie: It was really crazy.  I had three days to do it.  My part was only at the beginning to we didn't need much more than that.  We were also working on the show [Roswell] at that time and I wasn't on break.  I had four days off to fly up to Vancouver, film everything and the return to work on Roswell.  Movies taken much longer to film than TV so we had to work very long hours and cram everything into a short amount of time.  While you are doing it you wonder how you are going to make it through i8t and aren't really enjoying yourself.  When you're done though, you are like wow, that was huge, I can't believe I did that.  It was really tiring but I was proud of myself for getting through it.

Teen.com: Do you feel like that's what you need to be doing right now?  Both movies and TV?

Katie: Especially at this point in my career.  It's important for me to continuously get myself out there and keep screaming that I'm here.

Teen.com: Where do you want to be in your career in five years?

Katie: I'd love to be at a place where it's easier.  When a script comes along with a role that I absolutely adore I can get it without having to kill myself or be really disappointed if I don't get it.  A place where I have more choices and less instability.  I'd also love to be producing.  I have such definitive ideas about what I'd like to see out there and I'd like to be able to just do it.

Teen.com: Whom would you like to work with on a movie?

Katie: That's easy.  I would love to work with Edward Norton.  I think he is immensely talented and he is the kind of actor that gives a lot so that you could do your best too.  I think I could learn a lot from him.  I love Cate Blanchett.  I think she is another really talented woman.  I just love her power and her presence in films and how she is like a chameleon that can do anything.  It is very inspiring.  I will do whatever it takes because I want to be that good.  And then of course, Julia Roberts.  She has it all.  She has the most wonderful personality, the most striking looks and is a great actress.  BACK TO THE TOP

KATIE TARGETS GROUND ZERO

24.04.01 - NBC has given a greenlight to Leonard Goldberg's Ground Zero, a telefilm starring Katherine Heigl and Dawson's Creek's Kerr Smith, in a story based on James Mills' best-selling book The Seventh Power.

The pair play two college students who construct a nuclear bomb to prove how much the country needs to examine its national priorities.  Betrayed by a fellow student, the bomb ends up in the hands of a terrorist.  The two students must then join forces with the government to prevent the destruction of the San Francisco Bay Area.  BACK TO THE TOP

07.03.2001 - Lions Gate has acquired the US distribution rights to 100 Girls, a romantic comedy in which Katherine stars alongside Jaime Pressley, Larisa Oleynik, Marissa Ribisi and Jonathan Tucker.

Speaking of the film, Katie told Maxim, "It's a cute movie.  I just wish I wasn't wearing only jeans and a bra in this one scene... Because I'm leaning over this guy and shaking him, and I didn't realize exactly what they do when you're moving around a lot.  If they were fake it'd probably look better."  BACK TO THE TOP

SORORITY RULE

28.02.2001 - According to upcomingmovies.com, Katherine is set to star in this film, due for release sometime next year.  Described as "Animal House for women with the edge of Election," the film is "a satirical take on the seedy underbelly of sorority rush week as a New England college."  BACK TO THE TOP

KATIE AT VALENTINE PREMIERE

10.02.2001 - Here's Katherine at the Valentine premiere in Los Angeles on 1 February.

According to Variety, Katie was torn between attending the premiere and staying at home to watch Survivor: The Australian Outback, which she described as "the perfect thing to sit with a bunch of friends and watch and just rank on everybody ... I might be watching it this year just to make fun of everyone," she said.

Guests chowing down on burgers, quesadillas, fish sticks and rum punch at the Maxim-hosted after-party in Hollywood's American Legion Hall included director Jamie Blanks; stars David Boreanaz, Jessica Capshaw, Woody Jeffreys, Denise Richards and Marley Shelton; as well as Charisma Carpenter, Rachel Hunter, Bob Saget, Tori Spelling, Tangi Miller (Felicity) and George Eads (CSI).

The film's Denise Richards is the cover girl of Maxim's US edition for February, while Jessica Cauffiel is also featured inside.

The film opens in the UK on 16 June.  BACK TO THE TOP

KATIE TALKS VALENTINE

18.01.2001 - On Sunday, January 14, David Boreanaz and Katherine Heigl appeared at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention to discuss their upcoming film Valentine.

Based on the novel of the same title by Tom Savage, Valentine's holiday-themed killer-on-the-loose plot harkens back to films like Halloween, Friday the 13th and, of course, My Bloody Valentine.  "There is this series of killings involving five girls," says Boreanaz, describing the film's plot.  "We don't really know who's doing it or what's doing it."

Heigl describes Jamie Blanks, director of Valentine, as "a big, big horror film fan, so he kind of knew all the angles."  Boreanaz agrees, saying: "When I sat with Jamie in his office, he had posters of Carrie and the original Halloween on the walls."

Boreanaz goes on to describe the "very strong vision" of Blanks, a native of Australia who made his feature directorial debut in 1998 with the surprise hit Urban Legend.  "When I met him and he told me about it," the actor recalls, "I said, 'What's going to distinguish this from other horror/slasher films?'  Jamie said that it's not going to be the average 'See the guy, it's spooky, he turns around and bumps into somebody to get the jolt.'"  Heigl adds: "Jamie is a really passionate and fun director.  He sets suspense very well, and he shoots in a very Hitchcockian way."

For the actors themselves, who have both come to prominence via television shows, Valentine represented a welcome foray into features.  "TV is a very, very different deal than films," states Heigl, who in Valentine plays a med student named Shelly.  "I think it's a lot harder to play the same character for nine months of the year.  It's hard to keep the character interesting."

The big difference between features and TV for Boreanaz (who plays a journalist in Valentine) is the pacing.  "When you shoot a film, you shoot [script] pages a day.  When you do a series, it's eight pages a day.  That's probably the biggest difference."  He adds that "Valentine was a wonderful learning experience.  And I'm still learning."

Valentine opens in the States on February 2.  If you're looking for a sneak preview of the movie, a trailer is available on the film's official site.
