BRIT
AWARD NOMINATION
18.01.2001 - Dido received another boost this week with the news that she
has been nominated in the Best British Female category at this year's Brit
Awards (although if Craig David can be nominated in the Best British
Newcomer category, how come Dido isn't as well?)
Hosted by Ant and Dec,
the awards ceremony takes place at Earls Court 2 on Monday 26 February and
will be broadcast on ITV the following day. Back

UK
CHART NEWS FOR 14 JANUARY
14.01.2001 -
Dido continues to climb the UK album charts, which are once again topped
by The Beatles' seven-times platinum 1.
The chart published today
sees No Angel in its highest ever position of 11, up fifteen places
from last week's number 26. This continues the album's recent run of
impressive chart performances that has seen it climb from number 44 in the
last three weeks.
Now in its thirteenth
week on the Top 75, No Angel has clocked up UK sales of over
200,000, and should get another boost when Roswell theme Here
With Me is released as a single next month. Back

NO
ANGEL MAKES US TOP 10
11.01.2001 - January
tends to be a dismal month at record shops and in a predictably static
post-Christmas chart there were no new entries in Billboard's Top
200 album chart for the week ended 7 January.
Despite selling 40% fewer
copies than the previous week, The Beatles' 1 held onto top spot
for the sixth consecutive week, shifting 268,000 copies to propel it past
the 5 million mark in the US alone.
Last week's Grammy
nominations didn't give leading nominees Eminem and Destiny's Child huge
bounces - in fact sales of both artists' discs were significantly lower,
probably because those album were released months ago.
However, one album
released months ago was the only new entry in the Top 10. Despite
sales dropping 21 percent, from 113,000 to 89,000, Dido's No Angel
rose from 17 to 9, having first charted at number 144 way back on 3 June.
We'll have news of No
Angel's UK chart performance on Sunday. Back

NEW
ACTS TO LOOK OUT FOR...
06.01.2001 - Dido was one
of the Daily Mail's Three New Acts to Look Out For. Here's
what they had to say:
DIDO: Best known for her
role on Eminem's chart-topping single Stan, British singer and
songwriter Dido should emerge from the U.S. rapper's shadow in 2001.
Her tender atmospheric debut album, No Angel, was released in
October, but is due for a big push in Britain in February. Trained
at the Guildhall School of Music and formerly a singer with Faithless,
Dido should soon reveal the full scope of her talent.

NO
ANGEL BREAKS UK TOP 40
03.01.2001 - A month
before it's due to get some major plugging with the release of Here
With Me, Dido's debut album No Angel has finally cracked the UK
album Top 40, with an eight place climb to number 36 in the final chart of
the year. Back to the top
WHO'S
THAT GIRL?
20.12.2000
- Meet the breakout star from Eminem's hit single Stan - EW.com
talked to Dido before she made a splash in the shock rapper's song [This
interview took placed in June 2000].
One of the most talked
about tracks on Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP - which debuted at
No. 1 on Billboard's album chart today with the second best
first-week sales in history at 1.7 million copies - is Stan, which
features a length sample of the song Thank You by London based
literary agent turned dance pop chanteuse Dido. "Everyone I
play for thinks the rap is brilliant, whether they like Eminem or
not," says Dido, 26, of the cut that chronicles a fan letter exchange
between the rapper and a murderous admirer. "It's very dark,
and I quite like that about it." (EW's album review
calls the blend of Dido's plaintive singing and Em's rapping perhaps
"the most moving song about star worship ever recorded.")
Eminem may be a
visionary, but he isn't the first one to notice Dido's moody tune, which
comes from her 1999 debut album, No Angel. It's also featured
on the soundtrack to Gwyneth Paltrow's dual identity drama Sliding
Doors and provides the musical backdrop for the Sapphic sex romp
between Ellen DeGeneres and Sharon Stone in HBO's If These Walls Could
Talk 2. Not bad for a song which the songwriter herself
describes as "almost cheesy."
"It only took me
about five minutes to write," Dido says of the tune in which she
thanks a lover for giving her the best day of her life. "It was
almost a joke because it's so sweet." But fans are taking the
song's romantic sentiments quite seriously. "At gigs, guys have
proposed to their girlfriends while we're playing it," she
says. "Two weeks ago somebody got down on [his] knees in the
middle of the song and pulled out a ring."
And Thank You
isn't the only tune that's earning Dido ardent new fans. Her first
single, Here With Me, is the theme song for that I Was a Teenage
Alien cult hit Roswell. "The show has really helped
keep my album alive," Dido says. "A lot of people have
bought the album because of it." Indeed, after being released
last June No Angel just debuted on Billboard's album chart
at No. 144.
But with her
increasing chart success does Dido worry about becoming a potential target
for Eminem, who seems opposed to all things pop? "He can do
what he likes," says Dido, who will begin recording her next album at
the end of the year. "It'd be even more exposure for me 'cause
I'd be out there with the likes of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
And then I can dis him in one of my songs." Back

BIG
IN AMERICA
17.12.2000
- Last week's Sunday Times featured an article by Dan Cairns
looking at how "Islington-born singer Dido has taken the States by
storm - with a little help from Gwyneth and Eminem".
Heard the one about
the young British singer-songwriter who has just sold 1m records in
America? Chances are you haven't, though that it exactly what the
28-year-old Dido Armstrong has done. In the week when Sade's new
album entered the US charts at no. 3 - and a month after Radiohead's Kid
A went straight in at the top - the recent doom-mongering about the
sorry state of Britain's musical export industry begins to look a little
alarmist.

DIDO
#1 IN UK SINGLES CHART
15.12.2000
- Well, almost. Eminem's Stan, which features of sample of
Dido's Thank You became the umpteenth UK number one single of the
year last Sunday, crashing in at number one (don't they all these days?)
ahead of the spirited challenge of We Can Fix It by, err, Bob the
Builder.
Dido's own Here
With Me is released as a single in the UK in February. Back

DIDO
REFLECTS ON EMINEM
04.12.2000 - Dido wants
to make one thing perfectly clear: She didn't just let Eminem sample her
song Thank You for his single Stan in order to boost
exposure for what was a slow-selling debut album.
"I just thought it
was brilliant," the British singer, whose surname is Armstrong, says
of Eminem's purloining of Thank You. "I was so excited,
because I thought it sounded really good. And I really do genuinely
like him. If he didn't do this intelligently, if he was just an
idiot, I might think differently about his record. I just think he's
clever, and he's funny. He does it so well. He's a really
great storyteller and entertainer."
And not a bad guy to have
on your side, given Eminem's multi-platinum sales status and his recent
coronation as Spin magazine's Artist of the Year. Stan
has opened a path to the airwaves for the full version of Thank You
and raised the profile of Dido's album, No Angel. And after a
few guest appearances during Eminem's sets on the Anger Management
tour, Dido - whose previous musical patron was Sting - is making the most
of her new opportunity with her own spate of touring, including a series
of radio station holiday concerts.
"I'm enjoying
it," she says. "It's been such a slow build that it's not
really affecting me very deeply. I've been plodding towards this,
and right now it's lovely. Things seem to get done a lot quicker in
my life now - that's the only real difference."
In addition to all this,
Dido recorded a new track, Christmas Day for Nettwerk Records' Christmas
Songs collection. She's also performing a new song, Don't
Leave Home, in concert and plans to appear on the next album by
Faithless, the trip-hop band led by her brother, which also gave Dido her
start.
