Covering the first two
seasons of Buffy, The Watcher's
Guide is one of the best guides to a TV series around, and is far better
than the majority of official guides, which tend to be high on the gloss and
photos and not so high on the content.
After a couple of short
sections (the mythology of the show, a guide to Sunnydale and a look at the
characters), we get to the book's main section - a look at the first two
seasons, complete with plot synopsis, cast list and box-outs on things like
continuity, the pop-culture and quotes, without overdoing the silly
categories thing as some unofficial guides tend to.
Whether it's through luck or
judgement, the songs played during each episode are listed in a separate
section, which enables the reader to easily see which episode a particular
song was played in as well as checking which songs were played during a
particular episode, without having to flick back and forth through the rest
of the book.
Following the episode guide
are a couple of sections on the show's monsters, as well as its romantic
couplings. The latter highlights one of the book's few faults - a
slight tendency to overuse quotes from the show. As well as featuring
a "quote of the week" for each episode, they are heavily featured
in both this section and the character guide, and anyone reading the book
from cover to cover may find the same quotes cropping up more than
once. Although if you're merely flicking through the book as a
reference, this is unlikely to be too much of an annoyance.
The final third or so is a
behind the scenes feature with short bios and interviews with the cast and
crew. It's a little annoying to see the crew asked if they have any
scars, etc, but the book has a level of access to those responsible for
making the show that other guides can only dream about.
Pretty much a must-have for
any Buffy fan, The Watcher's Guide
is easily the best guide to the show's first two seasons there is.
