A simple search on Amazon
reveals that Chris Nickson has written a number of 'unauthorised
biographies' on various celebs, all of which appear to be culled from
previously published material rather than offering any new.
The acknowledgements section
lists all of these sources, but the text itself doesn't divulge the origin
of quotes, etc, but anyone who's read more than a couple of the listed
interviews and features is unlikely to be in too much danger of stumbling
across anything they didn't know.
However, even this approach
need not have been too bad. Some fans might be grateful for having the
information in one place rather than scattered across half a dozen magazine
articles.
Unfortunately, the author
misses even this modest target. The early chapters, concentrating on
David's life before Buffy are the more interesting,
but later ones dissolve into little more than a resume of the first three Buffy
seasons (it was published before Angel debuted),
including an unexpectedly large amount of material on Charisma Carpenter and
her character.
There are also several
errors, ranging from some slack typos through to more serious ones such as
the dating of Graduation Day, Part 1 to 18 March,
1999. The author also shows a tendency to write to the book's length,
with the later chapters being little more than a recap of Buffy
and a look forward to Angel, as well as a habit of
reusing certain phrases ("good-looking and buff" pops up at least
three times).
Big-time Boreanaz fans might
find it just about worthwhile, but everyone else would be advised to give it
a miss. Unless they can pick it up dead cheap like I did...
