THE XANDER YEARS, VOL. 1

Keith R.A. DeCandido, who worked on The Watcher's Guide turns his hand to the fiction side of Buffy with these three novelised episodes from Buffy's first two seasons.

It's the usual Pocket Books' format of three episodes revolving around a particular character, some linking material (which somehow reminded me of The Rachel Papers - probably the fact that it's supposed to take place on one night while the rest of the book is a look back at previous events), and eight pages of familiar photos.

This time it's Xander Harris who takes centre stages with adaptations of Teacher's Pet, Inca Mummy Girl and Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.

All three episodes also feature our hero's fumbling attempts with the opposite sex - Ms French in Teacher's Pet, Ampata in Inca Mummy Girl and the female half of Sunnydale in Bewitched...

Neither of the first two episodes can be ranked amongst the best Buffy episodes, so they don't really lose anything on the printed page.  And, there's the advantage that it possible to get through them in novelised form quicker than watching them, unfortunately, the superior Bewitched... doesn't come off quite as well.

Still, at 227 pages, this is longer than some of the other novelisations and there's the odd link here and there across the stories that wasn't in the televised episodes.  However, as with the other novelisations, if you've got them on tape and you're not a completist, then you're not really missing anything by giving The Xander Years, Volume 1 a miss.
