THE WILLOW FILES, VOL. 1

Pocket Books' latest collection of novelised Buffy episodes brings together I, Robot...You, Jane, Phases and Dead Man's Party.

As with most of the other novelisations, for the most part this is a pretty straightforward adaptation of the scripts, topped and tailed by entries supposedly from Willow's journal.

This switch from first person to third person jars a little, particularly in the segment prior to Dead Man's Party, and it might have been better to have told the whole story from Willow's point of view. Although this would have made for a somewhat unusual novelisation, as anyone who's read Donald Cotton's Doctor Who novelisations can testify, it would also have made the book a more interesting read than it actually is.

What we've got is the usual script plus a few additions, which leads to a pretty average book, especially since I, Robot... and Dead Man's Party are among the series' weaker episodes.

If you haven't got the actual episodes on tape then this is a relatively cheap way (although if you live in the UK buy it online and not in the shops where the going rate seems to be £4.99) of acquainting yourself with the episodes. Otherwise it's only really worth it for the sake of completism.
