Aptly named, Visitors sees
several new in Sunnydale - a group of student teachers, an old adversary,
someone who watches the Watchers and a korred, who forces its victims to
dance themselves to death.
There are some enjoyable things
about Visitors. The characterisation of the regulars is pretty
good, despite the usual conflicts with the TV series, and Giles is well
used, especially since the library has been taken over by the student
teachers. The visitor from the Watchers' Council is also a good idea,
with a particular interest in how one of the Scooby Gang shapes up.
Unfortunately, the book fails down
on the plot. Even for a YA novel, just over 160 pages is a little on
the thin side, and consequently there's not a great deal going on in Visitors.
And, what little there is, isn't great.
With some trimming of a few needless
scenes, Visitors might have made an interesting, if unexceptional,
read in a Buffy short story collection, but as a standalone novel it
is a little disappointing. It's not badly written by any means, and
the characters are well drawn, but the plot lets things down.
