Given the cover of Unnatural
Selection, it's rather appropriate that the Buffster takes a bit of a
back site in this entry in the YA series.
A babysitting Willow
provides us with a link into plot of faeries stealing babies. But
these aren't just any old faeries, they're Russian ones disturbed by
Gallivan Industries' plan to develop Weatherly Park.
Naturally, the Scooby Gang
are soon on the case. Xander and fellow comics fan Hutch undertake a
bit of breaking and entering while Buffy and Angel get to pose as a married
couple.
There's a fair bit of
familiar stuff here. We've seen the faeries before (except Buffy
doesn't seem to have remembered) and the baby-snatching is reminiscent of Band
Candy. And, of course, there's the usual continuity problems
with the TV series - the events of Lovers Walk don't appear to have
happened in the Pocket Books take on Buffy.
It's nice to see someone
other than Buffy take centre stage for a change, but that doesn't stop Unnatural
Selection from being a pretty average read.
