Pocket
Books seem intent on giving Doyle as many adventures as possible,
despite the fact that he only got nine episodes on TV.
Anyway,
Cameron Dokey, whose previous novels include an entry in the
Charmed series, as well as the Buffy novel Here
Be Monsters, gets to cram another case inbetween City
Of and Hero. Well, actually between Rm W/A Vu
and Hero since Cordy's flatmate Phantom Dennis is also
featured.
As
usual, it's Doyle's vision that kick-starts the investigation.
This time TPTB are inconsiderate enough to send it to him whilst
he's out on a late-night hunt for some Guinness. Even worse,
when he comes round, he drives potential victim Terri Miller
into the arms of the suave stranger, who just happens to belong
to a mysterious cult.
Further
investigation leads the team to conclude that the fire demon
cult referred to in the vision could bring about the end of
the world, which would at least put an end to the series of
murders that the LAPD are investigating. Kate Lockley might
not be directly involved in the Krispy Kritter Killer investigation,
but she still gets a fair amount to do, including getting flak
from the officer in charge of the case, and sending her friend
Deirdrie Arenson to Angel.
To
be honest, I'd like to see Pocket Books starting to give us
some more upto date Angel novels, and it's starting to
become a drag having the original line-up return for book after
book.
Having
said that, The Summoned is a pretty enjoyable read, although
it's nothing spectacular.
