Ray Garton's Resurrecting Ravana treads pretty familiar
ground for those who have read a few of the other Buffy novels - a new member of
the Sunnydale High staff and a new exhibition at Joyce's gallery, to name but two.
Things start off quite
interestingly with a series of deaths blamed on hellhounds, and a series of violent deaths
involving previously close friends, one of whom will murder the other then end up dead
themselves, including a pair of teachers at Sunnydale High.
The gang soon discovers that
someone is trying to resurrect a Hindu demon, with initial suspicion falling on the
school's new guidance counsellor, Promila Darauwalla. Well, she is new, expendable
in plot terms and Indian. Plus she's become very friendly with Willow.
That, as least as far as
Buffy is concerned, would help explain Willow's weird behaviour, although as far as Willow
is concerned, it is Buffy who's acting weird. The pair even come to blows over it,
but they work it out within a few pages.
Add in the return of an old
adversary, a mysterious limo and Joyce's would-be exhibitor and the story is definitely
readable without ever rising too far above average. One of the plot twists is also
obvious immediately, thus making its "revelation" somewhat less than impressive.
If you're buying the Buffy
novels, then Resurrecting Ravana proves an okay addition, but as with the rest of
the series, the lack of continuity, both to other novels and the TV itself proves
frustrating. Pocket Books might have taken a snapshot of where the gang are
relationship-wise but this approach just doesn't work and jars with the characters'
development on-screen. Back
