BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: WILLOW & TARA

After co-writing Paint the Town Red with James Marsters, Christopher Golden teams up with another Buffy actor for a one-shot comic based around a couple from the show.

This time, his co-writer is Tara Benson, and therefore it's not surprising that the characters in question are Willow and Tara.

The plot itself is rather reminiscent of the Charmed episode Fourth Sister.  But this time the trouble is started by a wannabe witch from UC Sunnydale's wiccan group who wants to join in with Willow and Tara's little games.

Naturally trouble ensures, but as you'd expect the outcome is rather more gruesome than anything we saw on Charmed.

Set during season four, the couple's relationship is still represented by the holding hands that The WB went in for rather than what we got on UPN.  To be honest, the couple aren't one of my favourite parts about Buffy - while I could buy their relationship, Willow's later "gay now" phase smacked of the "we're so cool, we've got a gay character" attitude that you never expected from the show.

Not for the first time I found the artwork in a Buffy comic detracted from the overall package.  In places it's nicely expressive but it has to be said the likenesses are pretty poor.  I don't expect photo-realism from every artist, but it would be nice to recognise all the regular characters - Anya looks nothing like Emma Caulfield and Tara never looks anywhere near as good as she does on the cover.

Although there's never really any doubt that the pair will solve everything in time, this is a reasonably enjoyable one-shot, even if some of the artwork could have been better.
