Issues
four through seven of the Dark Horse comic series collected
in one handy volume, although exactly what it's "handy"
for is open to debate. I mean, it's a lot harder to roll it
up and use it to swat flies with than the individual comic books...
Anyway,
of the four strips here, we open with what's probably the strongest,
White Christmas, which sees a neat little story accompanied
by some rather average artwork. Nice to see the rest of the
Scoobies being used well here, especially Cordelia.
Sadly,
we're into the Hector Gomez artwork era in this collection,
and after an average start, his work rapidly goes downhill over
subsequent issues.
Happy New Year continues the seasonal trend, but a slightly
better than average story is brought down by the artwork.
Finally,
we get the two-part New Kid of the Block. Part one sees
virtually nothing happening storywise, but at least there's
the artwork to savour. Well, no actually, as it's appalling.
Both
artwork and story improve (and the latter improves quite considerably)
for part two, with some neat story revelations and good kitchen
utensil usage by Buffy.
All
in all, a bit of a disappointing collection. Gomez's artwork
is for the most part terrible, but the first and fourth strips
do have a good story behind them. BACK
