Three short
stories, each revolving around a different couple from the television
series.
First up,
we have One Small Promise with Buffy and Riley. The plot - or
what passes for the plot - features one of Sunnydale's least convincing
couples on a night out. After dinner, Buffy gives Riley a silver
necklace and the pair proceed to argue while beating up some vamps.
Storywise
this one is pretty weak. Buffy and Riley were never a great couple on
TV, and they're certainly not a great couple here. Having characters
stand around arguing in place of an actual plot is always a bit of a
cop-out, and that's pretty much what we've got here. Coupled with some
less than brilliant artwork - Buffy's smile and the light on her face
reminded me more of Mr. Punch than SMG - this one is easily skippable.
Next we
have Willow and Tara in Punish Me With Kisses. At the time the
strip was written, the pair's relationship had yet to descend into the
tedium of seasons five and six, and despite its brevity, it's a enjoy little
tale.
Chynna
Clugston-Major's artwork helps things along, although for some reason Ogden
seemed to be based on the bloke from the Monopoly board. Clugston-Major
makes Willow and Tara rather cute looking, although the final frame has Tara
looking more like Dawn in my opinion!
Finally,
Spike and Dru return in Who Made Who?
Christopher
Golden has upped the sex and violent quotient in the pair's non-TV
adventures, and this one's no different, with some torture scenes that mean
this one probably isn't suitable for the younger fans (a shame, because the
Willow and Tara story probably would appeal to kids).
Despite a
couple of strange looking panels - the one with Spike overturning a table
looks very strange - this is a pretty enjoyable tale, although as with the
other two the story itself is somewhat slight.
All in all,
a rather average collection that would have been better if the opening story
had been a different one.
