The
Supernatural Defense Kit contains four objects in an
attractive slipcase - an expanded hardcover version of the Dark
Horse comic story The Final Cut, a gold-coloured cross,
a Claddagh ring and a vial of holy water which has silver flakes
suspended in it.
The
Final Cut was reviewed when
it was first published in #8 of Dark Horse's Buffy comic
series, so there's no point in going into too much detail here.
All
that's really worth adding is that the original Dark Horse strip
has been expanded by eight extra pages, which means Buffy gets
slightly longer fights at the start and end of the story and
a late-night picnic with Angel and there's a couple of extra
scenes at Sunnydale High as well.
However,
even in this extended form, the story is still nothing to write
home about - just the familiar pre-Bad Blood story a
new villain who Buffy must defeat before he sacrifices the Scooby
Gang who have stupidly managed to get themselves tied up.
The extra scenes don't really add anything to the story - the
picnic with Angel only seems designed to give Buffy some holy
water which she then uses (although quite why since she's not
facing a vamp) in the fight later on.
This
is a shame since the artwork is amongst the best in the whole
Buffy series, just a shame that Andi Watson's writing
wasn't up to the same high standard.
The
rest of the "kit" is made up of the three items mentioned
in the first paragraph, which don't really amount to much.
Okay, you don't expect too much but even so, all three are still
fairly cheap and tacky looking - pretty much the sort of thing
you might expect to find in a Christmas cracker to be honest.
Both
the whole kit and The Final Cut are nicely packaged,
that's the best thing about it - as a whole the Supernatural
Defense Kit is simply not worth the money. BACK
