The Past Lives
crossover series continues, with its first Buffy installment.
Things get off
to a rather poor start, with Buffy and Riley demon hunting in
Sunnydale. It's largely an excuse for some stupidity that simply
isn't funny (would Giles really send her out with instructions
that she can barely read?) while the tape recorded sounds to
defeat a monster was previously used in Teacher's Pet.
The groans continue
with the Scooby Gang meeting at the Expresso Pump, although
fortunately Buffy quickly tells Xander to shut up. On the plus
side, the first panel inside the place features a very effective
likeness of Anya, which is something to shout about when some
of the other characters look nothing like the actors who play
them.
Things then pick
up, as we move between the various plotlines, with a hospitalised
Cordy in LA, Buffy preparing to leave Sunnydale, Giles' telephone
conversation with Quentin Travers and then the revelation of
just why Alexa Landry is gunning for Angel.
One major nitpick
I would have at this stage is Giles' supposed relationship wtih
Alexa Landry. She looks like she's in her 20s, so it seems very
unlikely that he could have been "involved" with her
when her first became an operative for the council, unless that
was just before he became a Watcher (which seems highly unlikely
and in any case she'd still be close to jailbait).
Things then go
downhill once again with the arrival of Captain Beaky and his
gang to take on Angel once again, after which Alexa Landry shows
up.
Then we're at
Angel Investigations where Buffy and Giles find Travers waiting
for them in an otherwise deserted office, only for a bunch of
crap looking demons to turn up in time for the cliffhanger.
Plot-wise, it's
a bit of a mixed bag. The Buffy scenes, or perhaps the
Sunnydale scenes would be a better term, would have been a lot
better had the stupidity level been toned down, while the Angel
ones are let down by the crap looking demons.
On the plus side,
there's some decent art (Anya, Cordy in her pyjamas and the
leather-clad Alexa) despite the rubbish demons and some dodgy
likenesses, and at least there's a fair amount going on.
Not as good as
PART I
but it does enough to keep things moving along. BACK
