The first part of a five
part story, #21 gets The Blood of Carthage series off to a pretty
average start.
After a quick intro, we're
at a quarry outside Sunnydale where Buffy meets an old friend from the
Popsicle Parlor and Xander meets his old adversary Joe Burgess (from Wizard
#1/2). There's a piece of sloppy writing or editing here, with
Willow and Buffy's comments getting mixed up at one point!
A massacre at Willy's leads
Buffy to suspect local bogeyman Mad Jack, who she tracks down and
slays. Except that another dead body turns up after she's killed
him. Looks like someone else could be responsible...
As such, it's clearly
setting things up for the rest of the story, but the only real highlights
for me were Chynna Clugston-Major's flashback sequences, with an almost
manga-esque Willow and Xander.
So a pretty so-so story and
some average artwork - hopefully things will pick up as the story
progresses.
