PLOT
The Mayor's dead, Angel and
Buffy have gone their separate ways, yet there's something watching them,
drawn to their pain of being apart, and it'll do everything in it's power to
kill them.
While Angel drives to L.A
he sees a hitchhiker on the side of the road. Ever the hero he offers her a
ride, yet everything is not as it appears, especially when she morphs into a
demon.
Meanwhile back in Sunnydale
Buffy is taken an evening stroll, alone. With Angel gone Buffy is already feeling
the pain of being apart. When a fisherman grabs her attention though Buffy
decides to have a chat, until it too morphs into a demon.
Battling for their lives
Buffy and Angel slug it out with each of the Demons, until both of them are
on the brink of death and both enter a dream world.
There Buffy and Angel
finally realise that to survive this they need to be apart and both sink
back to their own bodies to fight the demons. Yet while they need to be
apart to kill the demons, perhaps it's also a message that Buffy and Angel
need to be apart to survive...
WRITING
Well there's no Selke or
Clones so it's already ranking high, yet for once there's also a sense that
this story actually means something, and proves quite sad as Buffy and Angel
finally learn that they are destined to be apart.
Petrie uses the comic form
to its full advantage, as a demon like the one here could never be done on
the show. Petrie also acts like he understands the characters inside out,
which in fairness he should as he is the story editor for the show.
ART
Minor's style is quite a bit
like that of the infamous Hector Gomez, yet with the focus solely on 2
characters from the show there is never any doubt as to who's who.
Minor also has a good sense
of pacing as the fight scenes play out well, and the slightly darker edge to
his drawing style really adds to the atmosphere of the story. Again some of
the backgrounds lack depth to them but this seems to be a standard complain
with all Buffy artists.
OVERALL
The best Buffy story in a
long while, with no real downside and one that actually ties into TV show
continuity. If only all Buffy comics could be this good, come back soon Mr.
Petrie.
