SMG STOOPS TO DO SCOOBY DOO

21.01.2001 - After claiming that she wouldn't stoop to do such a movie, SMG appears to have signed on to do the lame-sounding Scooby Doo live action movie after all.

The BBC Buffy website (is this really a good use of the licence fee?) reports Buffy co-producer Doug Petrie saying that the production team are working out a schedule with SMG to enable her to spend time on both projects during the coming weeks.

According to Petrie, the involvement of SMG - who will play purple-clad goddess Daphne in the film - will mean the demise of the Scooby Gang nickname.  "We can't use it any more," he said.  "She is literally part of the Scooby Gang in what I'm sure I'm sure will be a hit motion picture, so we're screwed with that!"

Presumably then, if the film bombs, we can expect the moniker to remain in use...  Back to the top

"...RUDE AND ARROGANT"

17.01.2001 - Thanks to 'methodman' for posting this snippet from Ceefax's Backchat section into AngelBuffyUK -

Viewers were asked to send in their highlights of 2000 and Miss Cage (17, from Birmingham) said, "My highlight of 2000 was meeting Nicholas Cage in Hollywood.  He was such a lovely bloke and very friendly.  The low point was meeting Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was rude and arrogant."  Back to the top

CRUEL INTENTIONS 2

15.01.2001 - Not strictly Sarah related, or indeed, at all Sarah related really, but this seems as good a place as any to run this one.

Remember Manchester Prep - the TV series prequel to Cruel Intentions that Fox cancelled before a single episode even aired?  Well, the footage that was shot (including an infamous scene where a teenage girl gets aroused while riding a horse) has been edited together as Cruel Intentions 2 and well air in the US on Cinemax at 10pm on 21 January.

Buffy fans might recognise Amy Adams who plays the SMG character from the film from her role as Beth in season five's Family.  She also played Maggie Murphy in the Charmed episode Murphy's LuckBack to the top

WANDA ON GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATION

02.01.2001 - According to Eonline's Wanda, Sarah is pretty much a dead cert for the Best Actress Golden Globe -

"Apparently the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is deeply moved by the heart-wrenching emotion conveyed by [Jessica] Alba's left eyebrow (the only part of her face that really moves.

"What's really disturbing is that Pouty stole thunder from the nominee who truly deserves big buzz: Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was finally recognised for her outstanding work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer... I can't bemoan the HFPA too much, though, because Sarah's nomination is such a divine surprise.  And unlike Alba, she has a good chance of taking home the award.  Sela Ward, Lorraine Bracco and Edie Falco are all fab, but the Golden Globes aim to be hip and edgy - and also try to avoid the last Emmy winner (Ward, in this case).  The slayer should be a shoo-in.  Back to the top

SMG GETS GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATION

21.12.2000 - Personally, I think that Shiri Appleby or Holly Marie Combs are far more deserving, but Sarah has been nominated in the Best Actress - Drama category in the 58th Golden Globe awards which will be handed out on 21 January.

Also nominated were Jessica Alba (Dark Angel), Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos), Amy Brenneman (Judging Amy), Edie Falco (The Sopranos) and Sela Ward (Once & Again).  Back to the top

SMG TO PLAY HERSELF ON GROSSE POINTE

18.12.2000 - In a recent online chat with Eonline's Wanda, Grosse Pointe creator Darren Star said that Sarah will be playing herself in her guest appearance on the show.  Back to the top

SMG IN COSMOGIRL

11.12.2000 - The December/January issue of CosmoGirl lists the magazine's eight CosmoGirl!s of the Year.

Apparently this means the winners are "someone who has the courage to stand up for what she believes in - she chooses her own path, no matter how difficult it may seem."  Apparently this description fits Sarah perfectly since she was so determined to get the role of Buffy - even though her agent warned her that she should stick with the safety of All My Children - that she endured more than 10 gruelling auditions.

The magazine's website includes this clip of Sarah to inspire its readership because apparently Sarah's "dedication and drive are a major inspiration for anyone who has ever wanted something MORE.  And she's proven that she's a role model in other ways, too.  Last year she got really involved with Habitat for Humanity, literally shovelling and hammering to build homes in underdeveloped regions.  It's pretty clear why CosmoGIRL! has chosen her to be their first CosmoGIRL! of the year."

A few snippets from theWB.com:

CosmoGIRL!: We think that you are amazing, but it's clear that Buffy is a pretty big inspiration to millions of girls, too.  Why do you think she's such a huge role model?

Sarah: She's relatable.  She's a girl who isn't the most popular, isn't the prettiest, isn't the smartest, but she found her talent and is okay with who she is.  She gets into situations that everyone's experienced.  Most people think of it as a show with demons and monsters, but then they're like "Oh wait, that happened in my high school!"

CosmoGIRL!: Have you ever had to deal with someone who didn't believe in you?

Sarah: Everyone has.  But you have to be confident with your choices because you're the only one out there who is going to take care of you.  And you have to live with yourself and stand by your choices - no matter what people say.

CosmoGIRL!: So true!  What qualities do you like most about yourself?

Sarah: I'm loyal.  I will be there for my friends through thick and thin.  And if I say I'm going be somewhere then I'm going to be there.  I get stuff done when I have to.  I'm a person first and an actress second.

CosmoGIRL!: You seem so balanced.

Sarah: It's so important to be well-rounded.  You have to be just as comfortable going to a heavy metal concert as you are going to the opera or the ballet.  I could walk into a room of actors and know I had something to contribute because I can talk about acting.  But I want to be able to walk into a room of lawyers or doctors and still be able to hold a conversation and come off as an interesting person.

CosmoGIRL!: Holy confidence!

Sarah: I'm confident that I can act and I'm good at what I do.  But I'm also confident that if I couldn't act there are other things that I could do.  Back to the top

SMG "WOULDN'T STOP TO DO" SCOOBY DOO

10.12.2000 - Further to the Scooby Doo story below, the January issue of Seventeen asked Sarah about the Scooby Doo movie.

Displaying a Cordelia-esque degree of tact, Sarah is quoted as saying:

"When doing a film such as Harvard Man, with that high of content and level, I doubt any actor would then stoop to do a Disney genre type movie.  Freddie [Prinze Jnr.] has signed on to it, but I haven't even looked over the scripts."  Back to the top

SMG TO GUEST ON GROSSE POINTE

03.12.2000 - Zap2it.com reports that Sarah Michelle Gellar and former Beverly Hills, 90210 star Jason Priestley are to appear in forthcoming episodes of the WB's Grosse Pointe.

The pair have both worked with Grosse Pointe executive producer Darren Star before.  Priestley on 90210, where Star was a producer and Gellar on the HBO series Sex and the City.

"Sarah and I began talking about her guest starring last fall.  It was just a matter of coordinating schedules," Star said.  "I am a long term fan and am thrilled to be working with her again on Grosse Pointe."

Grosse Pointe, which debuted on the WB this fall, parodies teen shows, particularly teen dramas like 90210 and BuffyBack to the top

SMG "DONE DEAL" FOR SCOOBY DOO

02.12.2000 - Cinescape Online reports that Sarah Michelle Gellar (as Daphne) and Freddie Prinze Jr. (Fred) and Matthew Lillard (Shaggy) are "done deals" for the upcoming Scooby Doo movie.

Further to the report below, it now looks like the possibility of Christina Ricci as Velca has fallen by the wayside.  According to the Hollywood Reporter, Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks) is in talks to take on the role.

The film, which will be directed by Raja Gosnell from a script by James Gunn and John August, is scheduled to start shooting in February, which still seems likely to clash with filming of the final episode to Buffy's fifth season if you ask me.  Back to the top

BUFFY TO JOIN THE REAL SCOOBY GANG?

06.11.2000 - According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sarah Michelle Gellar may actually sign up to be a part of the real Scooby Doo gang.

It reports that Gellar and her real life boyfriend Freddie Prinze Jr. have been

Previously, Jennifer Love Hewitt was reportedly in the running for the Daphne Role, but according to Cinescape, nothing came of that.  Christina Ricci is supposedly a strong contender for the role of Velma.  Cinescape also reports that Mike Myers may still be up for the role of Shaggy, but there have also been rumours that Notting Hill star Rhys Ifans may be lined up for the part (thanks to Ghosty for the heads up on that one).

Raja Gosnell (Never Been Kissed, Home Alone 3) will direct the film, production of which starts in February and which will shoot in Australia.  The timing of this - not to mention that she seems a pretty unlikely Daphne to me - must make Gellar's participation a long shot as she would still be shooting Buffy's closing season five episodes and with the possibility of an actors' strike next summer, the chances of filming being delayed to accommodate her would be small.  Back to the top

WHERE WILL THEY BE?

From E! Online's predictions about what the "hottest stars of 2000 will be up to in the year 2025":

Career Highlights: Slaying bloodsuckers while wearing stilettos and hot pants, Gellar turned Buffy the Vampire Slayer into a kick-ass television show.  Take that, Kristy Swanson.

Biggest Mistake: Burning her bridges with Susan Lucci.  Erica Kane does not easily forgive or forget.

In 25 Years: After tripping over a gravestone and breaking her hip, a middle-age Gellar decides to retire from fighting the forces of evil and goes into seclusion, à la Greta Garbo.  She spends her time relentlessly watching Buffy reruns and talking to her cats Spike, Angel, Willow, Freddie and Xander.  Back to the top

THE WRONG BUFFY

Sarah Michelle Gellar arrested for drunken driving?  That's what Fashion Wire Daily reported (for "about 60 seconds," says the Web site) before running a corrected version.  No, it was the "other Buffy," actress Kristy Swanson, who first embodied the vamp slayer in the 1992 movie, who ran foul of the law Friday night.

Even so, Gellar's rep was fuming to the New York Post about the mix-up, "God!  Don't these people ever watch the news?" she told the tab, which was glad to seize the opportunity to poke fun at a rival publication.

Firing a shot right back at the Post, toward's FWD had this to say: "What's more important: Mixing up Sarah Michelle Gellar with the former Buffy, Kristy Swanson, or reporting that some of America's greatest soul stars have attended the birthday party of a long-dead king?"

Citing a Page Six gossip column in the Post that dishes that "Eartha Kitt, James Brown and Earth, Wind and Fire were flown to Rabat, Morocco, to perform at the 37th birthday of King Hassan," the fashion site writes, "This news would come as a big surprise to the current King of Morocco, Mohammed VI.  He buried his father, King Hassan II, in July 1999."

Sorry, Fashion Wire, most gossip column readers care more deeply about vampire slayers than Moroccan kings.

And the only thing wrong with Gellar is a bad case of the flu, according to the Post, which made her forfeit hosting duties at Glamour's pre-Emmy party in Los Angeles.  A smiling Sarah graces that magazine's cover this month.  Back to the top

GELLAR'S GROUCHY SIDE

05.08.2000 - From TV Guide Online:

Sizzling Sarah Michelle Gellar was acting every bit the diva last weekend on the set of indie auteur James Toback's upcoming flick Harvard Man.  A grouchy Gellar arrived on the Cambridge, MA, set with boyfriend Freddie Prinze Jr. and a full entourage, and fumed, "I missed the Pitt/Aniston wedding for this?"  Gellar, says, our witness, later grumbled to her bodyguard that a reporter was bothering her by writing in his notebook.  The scribe was told to stop scribbling.  The picture also stars Joey Lauren Adams, Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Stolz.

PROPHECY GIRL

Sarah will soon be featured as a "mystery guest" of dailymysteryguest.com's Internet book launch party for Elizabeth Haydon's fantasy novel Prophecy: Child of Earth, as part of a benefit for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.  While you can purchase the book when you hear the snippets, those correctly guessing the mystery reader (previous guests have included Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Scott Wolf, Dolly Parton and Orson Scott Card) through August 31st have a chance at all sorts of prizes.

Prophecy is the second part of a trilogy begun with Rhapsody: Child of Blood, in which the beautiful Namer Rhapsody, and her flaming sword Achmed, try to prevent the fire demon F'dor from waking the Primal Wyrm from its slumber at the heart of the world.  Back to the top

SARAH'S NOT OFF TO HARVARD

31.05.2000 - Dark Horizons reports that Sarah has dropped out of Harvard Man, citing script problems and a clash between the film's shooting schedule and her commitments on Buffy.

Instead, the Buffster may be starring alongside Ally McBeal's Portia De Rossi, Tim Allen, Richard Dreyfus and Christian Slater in Cletis Tout or (probably less likely) the ensemble comedy Big Trouble (according to the Hollywood Reporter, Katie Holmes is in negotiations to play Rene Russo's daughter in this one).  Back to the top

SARAH'S OFF TO HARVARD

28.02.2000 - Sarah Michelle Gellar has signed on to play a young Harvard philosophy professor in James Toback's semi-autobiographical feature Harvard Man.

In the contemporary tale based on Toback's 1960s misadventures, Gellar's character has an affair with a student basketball player (originally Toback wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to play the male lead but his post-Titanic asking price would be a bit too steep).

Toback has been developing the idea for five years, basing it on some of his experiences at college during the 1960s, including an LSD overdose.

Shooting is scheduled to being this spring while Sarah is on hiatus from BuffyBack to the top
