As you'd expect, REMEMBER THE LIES picks up where the first part of the FALSE MEMORIES arc left off - Dawn is missing, there's a new oriental vampire in town and there's also the mystery of the "missing" slayer.

Dawn quickly turns up at Spike's, shortly after Harmony reveals she's got a brilliant new plan to rid Sunnydale of the Slayer. Personally, I found Vamp Harmony to be a lame one-trick pony who should have been killed off, but she's quite well used for comic relief here. Her plan is so lame it's hilarious and even Dawn gets to rip the piss out of her.

Dawn also gets Spike to admit that he knows about the "missing" slayer, and the cover-up seems to go right to the heart of the Watchers' Council as Giles refuses to tell Buffy about it.

Elsewhere, we get the Scooby Gang being rather hard on Buffy over her treatment of Dawn, and a little more about the story's Big Bad.

There's a fair amount of pretty good stuff in REMEMBER THE LIES. Harmony's lameness is well used without being overdone, while Dawn gets a few decent lines and isn't just used as a whining kid. I'm also pleased to see a Big Bad who's not built up to be the world's most powerful vampire - make them threatening by all means, but too often they're built up to be all powerful only to get defeated rather too easily.

At first glance the "missing" slayer seems a bit ridiculous - if the Council were trying to cover something up, would they really overlook something as obvious as the dates? However, I suppose it's just possible that, in their usual pompous manner, they assumed this would someohw remain a secret.

The art is okay, but there is a tendency for characters who aren't the main focus to be somewhat lacking in detail. There's a good use of tall frames over a double page when the new Big Bad attacks one of his victims.

All in all, pretty entertaining, but the third part of a four parter is often the weakest installment, so hopefully things won't take a dip next time out. BACK TO THE TOP
